If You Can’t See It, You Can’t Be It

miss representation

More than a year ago, I saw the film Miss Representation. It was moving and inspiring and upsetting all at once, and even after months have passed I am still mulling its contents. One of the unexpected aftershocks comes in the form of a phrase that’s remained lodged in my brain. A political expert was explaining that the number of American women who show interest in pursuing political careers is dwindling. An oft-overlooked reason for this? There are relatively few women in politics right now. And – here comes the phrase – if you can’t see it, you can’t be it. read more

Reader Request: Finding Quality Accessories

how to shop for quality accessories

Natalie put this request into the suggestion box:

I have seen you cover this a little but, but I would love to see some more ideas on where to get QUALITY accessories. I love the leather belts and scarves you feature, but I never find them at thrift stores, and they cost a fortune at department stores. I would love to see some of your strategies on when and where to shop for them.

Weeellll, there’s no easy answer to this one, I’m afraid. I’ve been thrifting, Etsying, DIYing, antiquing, art fair-ing, and otherwise collecting my accessories for many, many years, culling and evaluating as I go. I have some marvelous stuff now, but I’ve had some utter crap over the years, too. And it’s taken me a while to train my eye. I’m happy to share a few tips for sourcing and spotting quality accessories, but definitely hope you’ll share more suggestions in the comments, too! read more

A roundup of vegan-friendly brands and styles

Rebekahasked:

What about a post of fun vegan clothes and accessories? It’s not all hemp and caftans, I swear.

Indeed! I am not vegan myself, but have been consistently impressed by the vegan-friendly offerings on the market in recent years. My understanding is that truly vegan clothing and accessories include absolutely no animal products whatsoever: No wool, silk, down, leather, fur, feathers, nothing. So that means man-made materials, cotton, linen, rayon, and other plant-based fibers are all fair game. (Other materials I’m missing? Do tell!) read more
