Already Pretty Self-guided Mini Makeover

SO. As you may or may not know, I hire myself out for closet consultations, personal shopping, and online style consults. I love doing all three, as there is nothing more rewarding than unlocking a client’s stylistic potential, but these consults are extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive. Which means I don’t do ’em cheap.

Back in November, I was chatting with a dear friend about the online consults and explained that they can take a really long time to complete because the first five steps are all on the client. I don’t even do anything until those tasks are completed, and I get consistent feedback from my clients that those initial exploratory steps are absolutely invaluable. They say things like:

Before I started writing this, I thought that what I wanted was help creating a basic capsule wardrobe suitable for a very casual lifestyle. I have contented myself with clothes that are “good enough” and that generally flatter my body. As I’ve been writing, though, I realize that what I really want is to have clothes that make me smile and that make me feel a little bit decadent.

My friend pointed out that many people might be perfectly content doing those initial steps alone, and a light bulb went off. I could offer some structured guidance to those who either lack the cash for a personalized consult, or prefer to work on sartorial changes at a slower, personalized pace.

And the Already Pretty Self-guided Mini Makeover PDF was born!

If you’re feeling stylistically lost but relatively self-motivated, interested in changing your look but unable to shell out for personal services, this little PDF might be just the thing. It contains an expanded version of the first steps that my online consult clients undertake, plus some additional advice and content. And although it won’t be as thorough or personalized as a formal consult, it’s a great place to start.

If you decide to give this process a whirl, you’ll examine and describe your current style, identify style icons and influences, and do a ton of writing and introspection. You’ll be forced to put some descriptive language around your ideal personal style. You’ll take inventory of your closet, create a “gradient” of outfits from awesome to blah, and spend several weeks experimenting with looks that align with your freshly-defined goals. Finally, you’ll cook up a shopping list to supplement your current wardrobe and spend some time refining and living with your self-tailored, carefully-honed new personal style.

    Hey Sal, how’d you get into fashion consulting? Was it through this blog?
    I’ve always been semi-interested in that job but have no idea how I would start. I mean, unless I just happened to look so awesome that strangers asked me for advice, whereupon I charged them. Which is probably what happened to you, now that I think of it. (Can one get a B.A. in Fashion Consulting?)

      Actually I don’t know why I wrote semi-interested. I think it would be an awesome job.

      It was through the blog, yes, and word of mouth around town. Before I began charging, I did ’em for friends for a long time to hone my system. There are definitely classes you can take and certifications you can get, but I imagine those are more helpful if you want to do styling for ads and photo shoots. Or celebrities!

    I got the .pdf as well…very timely as one of my goals for this year is to update my style and up my game as I will be moving into a newer and more senior professional position AND moving cities, which means I have started the process of going through every last thing I own and doing a a big purge (moving is great for that reason…makes you decide what you really need and what is worth taking along!).     Hi, Sally! I just bought the PDF and I’m eager to get started with my self-guided mini-makeover. I have a question, though. My weight fluctuates a lot. I have some much-loved pieces in my closet that don’t quite work now, but will if/when I’m down seven pounds. Should I hang on to them when doing my assessment or should I part with them?

      Laura, if you cycle regularly (seasonally, yearly) and know your cycles, hang onto them. If your weight fluctuates often, but not in any sort of pattern and ESPECIALLY if keeping smaller or larger clothes around makes you feel badly about yourself, donate or store them and focus on what fits your today-body.     Hi Sal ~ I love your blog and focus on positive body image. I’m not sure if the PDF would work for me. I have gained a lot of weight and I’m down to one pair of jeans that fit and some solid colored tees. I accessorize if I’m going out. I’ve read fashion books and even bought an online style program once that indicated piece by piece from tops to pants, and everything inbetween, what would look “good” on me. I haven’t been able to actually put anything together & my budget is small. I don’t know if my style has a name or if it even is a style. What would you suggest?

    Hi Sal! I just want to testify to how powerful a conscious investigation into personal style can be. I’ve been reading your blog for a while, and although I haven’t read the PDF (yet), I have identified 2 real-life style icons; paid a lot more attention to what’s already in my closet (although it hasn’t turned into a written list quite yet), and have stopped buying items just because they are on sale. Due to these changes in the past year, I’ve not only saved a TON of money, but I’ve finally begun to achieve the look that I’ve always wanted. It does require a lot of work–I have to get up a full hour earlier every morning so I have time to dress, style my hair and dab on some make up–but in the end it is so worth it! When I refuse to settle for a look that is “good enough” and I go for the look that is really a reflection of myself, I can honestly say it has a seriously positive impact on my mood and how I conduct myself throughout the day.
