Blast From The Past

Vintage magazine clutch

Back in the early 70’s, my mother had a couple of these magazine clutches. (If you’re not familiar with the style, they are designed to look like a rolled up fashion magazine when carried.) I hadn’t given them a thought until a few years back when (yes, I’ll admit it) watching an episode of Sex And The City, I spotted one carried by Sarah Jessica Parker/Carrie Bradshaw. This prompted a flashback to my mother’s, and curiosity led me to ebay where I found several available. I selected this one as it looked most like the versions I remembered.

magazine clutch, leopard scarf

It’s not exactly the most durable piece, being plastic covered in  paper, so I only haul it out occasionally. But it adds a really fun and unique touch to a simple outfit for a casual evening out.

Arche sandals, NYDJ white jeans

These sandals utterly seduced me with comfort. They feel SO GOOD on my feet and this tan color looks great with everything in my closet. And the nubuck is washable, really!

From the top:

Earrings: Stella and Dot, similar // Scarf: Ann Taylor, several years old, similar //  Sweater: Eileen Fisher from last year, this year’s version // Tank: Eileen Fisher, similar // Vintage Magazine Clutch: ebay, more options // Jeans: NYDJ “Alisha” // Sandals: Arche

Have you ever been inspired to seek out an item you remember from your youth or teens?

My mom had a couple of these, too! What I wouldn’t give to have them now. I always thought they were so cool as a kid and even more so now as an adult.
    Great outfit!

That clutch is fabulous. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one, but they are just too cool. I will have to keep an eye out for one!

On you it looks fine, but in general, magazine clutches are too close to kitsch for me. I might be persuaded if the magazine was vintage Mad.

So classy! Love the entire ensemble. You’re making me think about breaking out my white pants, Sue!
