It’s been a while since I did any layering of tights, but since today was another bitterly cold day, I thought I’d give it another whirl. The bright red tights seemed a bit much on their own, but the patterned black pair mutes them nicely.

The two black “buttons” on the cowl neck are actually earrings. I tried necklaces and brooches to tie my top and bottom halves together, but nothing seemed quite right. These post earrings add just a touch of black to my upper half.

It’s always consoling to me that others – and fashion experts, no less! – are sometimes as adamant on “matching” (I use that term loosely) an outfit as I am. Plus, it looks sooo good! 😀

I have a sweater with that exact same neckline. I never thought of doing something like that to not only add a dash of colour, but to also keep it from smooshing upwards toward my face. Lying flat like that gives it a nice frame for your face and hair.

How clever! I love the earrings-as-buttons idea. And that bright red & black combo looks stunning on you. I think I’m going to do red and black tomorrow… as usual, thanks for the inspiration! 🙂

That is a *great* look on you! Snug, stylish and flattering…

My first thought when I saw your first picture was “oh, I see what she means about being intentional with black/brights. The black buttons make the outfit!” How cool that you did it with earrings. I’ll remember that tip for sure!

Brilliant! I have a pair of bright red tights that I’ve never worn because they feel like a bit much. Putting a black tight over them makes them so much more wearable! What a great idea.

Oh! Two really great and easy tips (earrings as buttons and layering of tights) for taking an outfit to the next level! I absolutely love this look on you Sally! Thanks for braving the cold to share it with us!

Are the earrings tacked all the way through to the inside of the sweater, or are they just pinned on the cowl? If they go all the way through – how did you prevent them from leaving little stab marks in your shoulder all day long?

That’s perfect, I would have sworn that the earrings were a part of the actual sweater! I’ll have to try that. Also: This looks wonderful on you. And: I had planned to wear a black skirt + red sweater today. Really should get dressed now …

Love the earring idea! You are so creative.

I’ve used a clip on earring (thrifted) to snazz up a boring shoe a few times. You do have to be careful not to snag tights though. I’ve covered it with a band aid or a strip of duct tape on the inside and that has worked.

I would pee my pants at least once if I had to get out of two pairs of tights before going. But I’m pregnant and need to work on bladder control I guess.

LOVE the earrings! I never would have guessed! And layered tights. Two simple things that just add so much. WIN!

Using the earrings like that is genius!! I’ve had a few pairs of big studs languishing in my jewelry box for a few years since I stretched my lobes, but I think now they’ll get a second chance at life 🙂
