This is a tough time of year for me to be told I should wear flat shoes as often as possible. I’ve got a few pairs of flat boots, but it’s a smidge too warm for them. I’ve got flat sandals, but it’s a bit too cool for them. So we have these $12 Target ballet flats, that I’m pretty sure are made of paper. You’ll be seeing them a lot, I think. So long as they don’t dissolve in a rainstorm or something …

I’m amazed to discover that dressing around flats absolutely stymies me! Guess I’ll have to take this as a personal style challenge.

(Cheers to guest photographer Cal for this shot!)

It really does look a little strange to see you without your heels but you look great, and if it all helps you to heal more quickly then all the better.

I really love your grans brooch, it's beautiful.

  2. The Cheap Chick

A nice, cute pair to invest in ($40, not to heinous) would be Sketchers. I got some criss-cross strappy black flats that will look cute all spring – and they're fairly sturdy!

Here's to a fast recovery, so you're back in your heels in no time πŸ™‚

  3. Lisa

I love how simple yet elegant you look. I'm envious of that gray dress!

  4. K.Line

You manage to make the outfit totally chic – despite the application of flats! πŸ™‚ Good shot Cal.

  5. Rosie Unknown

I love this dress, it is simply wonderful. It looks quite wonderful with the flats.

i think the secret to flats, for me anyway, is quality and statement. i tend to wear fairly flat shoes in general, or small heels (under 2 for sure)…always have really, but even moreso now that i am mom (hard to toddle around after a toddler in stillettos!).

i like camper for comfortable, fairly flat shoes…they often have very cute styles that make a statement, look very euro…the twins series are a fave of mine.

but as a general rule, i feel like a flat shoe that's of nice quality and has something "special" about it are key…some little or big detail that makes it stand out…embellishment, fine materials, an interesting toe box shape. plain and boring and basic and cheap run the risk of looking just that. at least that's been my experience.

  7. lisa

I think you look perfectly elegant. Sorry to hear about the back pain and your consequent heels ban, though. Fingers (and toes!) crossed you feel like your old self soon.

  8. eek

I love your look – particularly the beautiful brooch. Clothes with history are the best!

Hope the flats help you heal quickly!

  9. Anne

That's a great outfit! I wear dresses + flats to work most days (I guess my challenge would be wearing more heels), so I think it's a great combo πŸ™‚

  10. Elissa

Very well balanced!! I don't miss the heels at all and hey– it's always fun to have a new style challenge, right? My favorite detail is how your bracelet balances the brooch.

  11. MJ

Be not stymied by the flats! I can pretty much only wear flats for work (I do sneak in a kitten heel every once in awhile) & I manage to make just about anything work.
As The Cheap Chick said, Sketchers has some great strappy 'sneakers' that I wear a lot. They're comfortable and look good with skirts or pants. They kind of have a Mary Jane vibe. I have them in black, brown & white & they're about my most worn 3 pairs of shoes.
Personally, I'd build the outfit you want & THEN think about shoes. Shoes rarely come into my thought process until I've put everything else together & I just make sure the shoes match the rest of the outfit. (I'm sure you do this anyway but I just thought I'd say it).

  12. WendyB

You can be a bad girl like Amy Winehouse in your ballet slippers!

  13. RoseAG

I walk a lot and ballet-flats from Target aren't my idea of comfy shoes.

Clarks Privo is another brand that makes flat shoes that aren't too awful looking and won't leave you with aching feet.

  14. Stephanie

The thing about the target shoes is that you must thing of them a disposable. I've had pairs make it through several months of near constant wear though I just carry them if its really raining and hope that I don't step in anything too gross.

  15. Lesa

Hi Sal, I always love gray as a neutral, you look wonderful. I have a low tolerance for heels so I will be interested in seeing what you come up with in your flat shoe dilema!

  16. Rad_in_Broolyn

I think that you're going to single handedly cause of flats revolution, Sal, with all the ladies whose style choices you influence.
The thing about flats (with me) is that it's often hard to balance comfy, cute, and not falling off my feet. Yes, that is an actual concern. I spent an hour and half at DSW on Saturday trying to find a pair of black ballet flats that did this, and it was an utter fail.
Also, you are very Audrey Hepburn in your flats and lovely tailored outfit. I remember this spot at the U very well. Aw…

  17. Amy

Oh my gosh Sally you look STUNNING in this outfit! I want that jacket!

  18. Desiree

I am absolutely *infatuated* with that jacket–I'm looking for a jacket in the same shape, although I'd prefer something with a touch of color. Gorgeous brooch, too. Good luck with your back pains. πŸ™‚

  19. Clare

It's amazing how different flats and heels look. I love the flats on you, though, and those particular ones look great with that sleek outfit!

  20. Michael McGraw Photography

Cal, you do an awesome job with these outfit shots. If I'm ever sick, I'm calling you in to sub.

  21. Ecc3ntricCynic

I also suggest investing more in a good flat. I've paid everything from $3 to $100 for flats and my favorite, most comfortable, durable pair were about $25.

I hope your shoe dilemma gets settled, There are tons of great flats out there.

I think you look super cute today and that jacket hits you right at the perfect length to make your waist look tiny!

  22. Joanie Coyote

You look totally cute in flats. A friend who had bunion surgery said her Orthopedist told her that flats aren't great for you so make sure you have whatever inserts you need. Also, when I sprained my ankle I got the best ever pair of Cole Hahn flats-ish that have a Nike heel so they are super comfy and they're leapord print. I got them at Marshall's so they were cheap but I'm just saying, look for good support too. Best of luck with your back woes.

  23. spacegeek

I saw you in that outfit, and thought, "Aw, look at Sal! Workin' those flats!" And then of course you mentioned that you are trying hard to figure them out. Wouldn't 'a known you were feeling funny about them. You do a great job as always and look fab!

  24. What Would a Nerd Wear

you look cute in flats, sister!
and i have those target flats too. they feel oddly like the paper pilgrim shoes i made in the fourth grade.

  25. akabini

Ooh, Sal – you're getting me with every outfit this week!

And thanks to you and your previous post, I scored a set of those Target flats. So consider me converted!

  26. MichelleK

Oh, I'm completely stymied by flats too. I would almost use the word 'hate', they just never look flattering on me! I don't like to feel stumpy. Plus, no matter how pricey and fine, they always give me blisters and rub-spots!! Blegh. But you look cute πŸ˜€

  27. Vildy

I'm kind of surprised the doc ordered flats – those ones you have on are really flat-looking in a non-cushioned, pavement-thudding way.
Usually docs tell you to avoid utterly flat shoes – no room for any kind of foot support. I think when they say "flat" they're thinking of something more along the line of
comfort shoes. See how you feel physiologically in something with some support and a 1/2 inch or so heel – some structure to the shoe.
Can probably find lots of sorta funky "flat" versions of the emphatic looking heels you like. Would be much easier for you to dress that way, too. Ballet flats are kinda like … paint for your feet. Too flimsy to support the outfits.

  28. Charlotte

Dansko and Earth both make lovely comfy flats, which I seem to have in abundance, along with some so-so comfy flats from Clark's. Both Dansko & Earth are not "flat" flat, but give arch support & come in a lot of cute styles.

  29. Imogen Lamport, AICI CIP

I so lovely ballet flats. I love the look of heels, but my bunions don't, so I tend to only wear them when I'm going somewhere to sit down.

the rest of the time I'm in flats. They work better with shorter skirts or trousers than knee or longer length skirts.

  30. JuliaDeBarri

Oh, Sal, settle not for the cute but utterly supportless Target flats! Especially if you have back problems, you need good alignment and arch support. I think this situation is an excellent justification for, perhaps, some lovely Tsubos? http://www.zappos.com/tsubo-kirs-black-silver (they come in RED too!), or Danskos http://www.zappos.com/dansko-kiera-black-nubuck or Clarks/Indigo/Privo: http://www.zappos.com/indigo-by-clarks-raus-purple-leather
Or even Earth shoes…they really do help your back, or at least they did mine: http://www.zappos.com/earth-able-mahogany-calf

    And there's always Fluevog:

I actually forgot how many awesome flats he has…hmmm…*drools slightly*

  31. Make Do Style

The flats look great. It is all in the proportions. Show more leg and be carefree!

  32. Sal

You guys crack me up. Fear not! I've got a couple more pairs of flats on the way with far more arch support, and will probably mix a few low heels in there soon. I've been in flat shoes since last Wednesday and am curious to see if it's really a factor …

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

  33. Annie

It really is an adorable outfit! Although I can relate to feeling a bit out of sorts when I step out of my heels… πŸ™‚

  34. Laura

    New reader delurking here… πŸ™‚
It made me smile to see how many people disliked the Target flats! I got the same ones in bronze last year and wore them to death. I still think they are one of my favorite pairs of shoes, and they work great for me as a mom of 2 very on the go little ones. But I prefer to be barefoot at home, so I guess this is about as close as I can get to that in public or playing at the park. πŸ™‚
I used to wear heels more often back when I worked in an office, but since I stay at home with my kids I pretty much live in ballet flats, but you have inspired me to try my heels again for when I go out. I even bought a new dark purple pair of super cute, and comfy heals and have been working them into my outfits. Thanks! πŸ™‚
I hope you are all healed up soon! In the meantime, enjoy your style challenge! I love seeing the outfits you come up with. πŸ™‚

  35. Kelly

Sal, I know you're normally a heels gal but I think these ballet flats look adorable on you! I'm positive you'll get into your groove soon. I'm always impressed by how well you think out different pieces. I mean, if I put on a scarf and it looks bad, all I can say is "this looks off." But when you put something on and it doesn't look right, you analyze it and come up with a solution. I'm always impressed with that!

  36. angie

It’s fabulous to see you in flat shoes, Sally. I love it! As a seasoned shoe lady you might like to add to your collection of flats! I hope your back feels better soon – such rotten luck. Take care and big hug.

  37. cathead

I had those same shoes in black and they just melted on me the first time I wore them in the rain. πŸ™

  38. KrissyBell

I have those same flats from Target in the Bronze and I love them, have them on today in fact. I've worn the color off of the area above the big toe, but they are as comfortable today as they were the first day I bought them. For me, and maybe this is just because I am obsessed with the short dress over leggings look, but flats always look better with a short legging. Or a cigarette pant. Good luck with this challenge.

  39. Cat

    Fab outfit!

I'm with Tricia on flats. I like 'em, but almost all of my pairs have some sort of detail rather than being complete plain – it seems to lift them, somehow, and make them fun. Today's have a zip flower, for example!

  40. Chelsea

I am loving the flats with this ensemble! Very Audrey Hepburn πŸ™‚ And the proportions of the flats with the shorter hem is perfect to show off your lovely ankles!

  41. All Women Stalker

You look great! And flats go with everything. πŸ™‚
