Already Pretty Daily Outfit 8/15/11 featuring pink tulle skirt

I never dreamed of becoming a ballerina and don’t generally swoon over romantic garments and looks, but I knew this skirt would be fabulous for juxtaposed looks. Here with a button-down and studs, and perhaps later with a graphic tee and boots. Tulle: Bizarrely versatile.

Several wearings in, I’m still just tickled that I found this bad boy at a consignment store. Yet again, it seems that the Thrift Gods were smiling down upon me.

I wonder if I’ll ever deplete my thrift karma. There could come a day when stained tees and jeans that have split at the butt seam are all I can dredge up. You just never know.

I have a skirt that’s black lace over two layers of brown taffeta. It’s super full and high-waisted and I get so many outfits out of it.

  2. Mia

Love it! I didn’t realize it until recently but I really am a fan of swishy, romantic-cute stuff, so a tulle skirt sounds like a lot of fun. And pairing sweet/edgy stuff is one of my favorite mental pastimes. I think if I ever get to shave my head, I’ll probably end up amping up the girliness/femininity of my wardrobe just for the contrast of it all.

This all to say: I likes yah clothes!

  3. Audi

Wow, you knocked it out of the park with this one, Sal. The classic shirt, the punky studded elements, the soft, feminine skirt — everything works together beautifully.

  4. Passerina

Wow! This is gorgeous. The length, cut and color of the skirt are so flattering on you! I love the contrast between the floaty skirt, studded leather accessories, and crisp white shirt.

  5. Ruthe

Goodness me Sal…you look so scrumptious. I’ve never seen a picture of you I didn’t like and this new hair style is dynamite. Dare I say it? You look downright sexy. Ruthe

One of my favorites of yours ever! The tulle skirt + that studded belt + those badass shoes = *genius*.

  7. Tia

I love the studs/tulle combination. I’m pretty sure that is the best thing ever.

  8. Rebecca

I was one of those kids who always dressed up as a princess or a ballerina for Halloween, which means I probably should invest in a tulle skirt as an adult.

  9. mckristie

Ohh again outfit after outfit of yours goes onto my list of future outfit ideas…. beautiful!

  10. Robin

Man! You did luck out! What a great skirt and I love how you played down the romanticism with the studded belt and white button down!

  11. CC

Oh MY GOSH!!! I don’t even have words to express how much I love the tulle skirt with the studded belt and shoes!!! Gorgeous. Just absolutely gorgeous.
Also, loving your new hair, which looks amazing and soooo cool.

I love this! It’s how soft and hard should be done. A little bit edgy, a little bit femme. I think thrifting karma works like this: Thrift for yourself, thrift for others, find those amazing pieces – then DONATE! Donation brings the Good Luck Fairy to douse you with thrifting luck dust. Without donation, there wouldn’t be those super cool pieces lurking in dingy stores in between those split-seam bum-jeans and stained tees.

This is a gorgeous outfit! Fab midi, super white shirt, and black shoes to bookend your hair. A winning recipe πŸ™‚

  14. Jen

I love the hard/soft/crisp combo, but think it might look even better with the shirt tucked into the skirt. πŸ™‚

  15. Marsha Calhoun

For some reason, you remind me of Ingrid Bergman in this photo – and that is a very good thing.

  16. J

I love the skirt. It’s so pink and princess-y. The muted pink makes it more grown up, which is good because sometimes tulle skirts come off as childish. I also like the bracelet a lot!

  17. Julia Greenwood

Ooooh Odille!!! Vintage Anthropologie, I do believe. I have that skirt. And I put on some weight, so when I found a larger size on EBay cheap…I admit, I bought it. They turn up on there. (I was just looking at Odille skirts. Keywords like “Odille” and “tulle” might turn up another one, but some ppl don’t know what tulle is! Shocking, eh.) Anyway, Sal, that is a KILLER outfit and since I own items similar to the other elements there, I might just do a tribute to this look of yours sometime. Smashing! πŸ˜‰

I don’t comment often (which I am working on changing!) but I think the last time I commented was the last time you wore this skirt. I just love it. It’s beautiful and I love what you pair it with. I also love your new haircut, it’s so… you. πŸ™‚

  19. Cel

Ah, I love the mix of studs and tulle! Tough and girly. Those sandals are wicked.

  20. Amber

I really, really want that skirt. Want. It. And am now going to search until I find just the right one. Gorgeous outfit!

  21. Lorena

I’ve been away for a while and am loving your new haircut.
    You are looking marvelous πŸ™‚

  22. Erika A

This is an awesome combo and it looks smashing on you. I want to try something similar with my black tulle skirt!

Question: how do you keep from snagging your bracelet and rings on the skirt? I have to leave off jewelery when I wear tulle or lace as I inevitably snag it.

    • Sal

Ooooh, I’m ridiculously careful. I sit at a desk all day, so my bracelet and rings don’t come into contact with the skirt often, but I throw a pashmina onto my lap just in case.

      • Erika A

A lap drape! That’s brilliant. I’ll have to remember that next time I’m at a desk or an auditorium seat – ie; somewhere I would be fidgeting or putting my hands in my lap.

  23. Clarice

I love anything reminiscent of a tutu so I have quite the burgeoning tulle skirt collection. I agree: they’re some of the most versatile and wearable items in my wardrobe. You can dress to exaggerate the femininity and romance of them or juxtapose them with things that are shrunken, faded or have rock/punk/manual work connotations to add some toughness. My current favourite combination is with a basic henley, a very fitted, faded vintage denim jacket (one of my best thrift store finds) and high-heeled Dr. Marten Regina boots. I love the combination you assembled. I always feel a bit awkward in shirts that button all the way up, but you’re inspiring me to revisit them.

What a great outfit! As a 20something punk/grunge kid working in a professional (albeit business casual) environment, I have a hard time switching gears between work and weekend. A look like this could help bridge the gap – thanks for the excellent ideas!
