It took me a long time to get dressed today. I woke up with what HM refers to as, “someone else’s blues” and pretty much everything that happened today rankled me. Including feeling unable to assemble an outfit that was sufficiently comfy and chic. Funnily enough, after I’d landed on this combination I realized that I was breaking two of my own personal style guidelines: Wearing what are essentially leggings as pants, and scrunching the living daylights out of ’em at the ankles. Apparently, my funk eventually morphed into sartorial rebellion.

Not that I feel style rules are hard and fast. Not by any stretch. And I tried this ensemble with actual jeans and I tried French cuffing the jeggings. It just worked best like this. Sometimes that’s how it goes.

Do you have style rules that you never break? How about ones that you LOVE to break?

I have stretched the “leggings are not pants” rule, but really, as long as your bum is covered, that’s the essence of complying with the rule, imo 😉 A long sweater qualifies. Not saying we should all do it with abandon, but some days…

A personal rule I have is about skirts hitting mid-calf. That’s the widest part of the leg & it’ll make the leg look heavier. And yet, I have a few skirts/dresses I love that stop right there (thanks to me being 5’2″), & I say ‘o maybe I’ll hem them an inch or two’ but I don’t. And I don’t mind how they look. With dark tights & heels, who really notices a slightly wider calf? Silly rule.

Funny, I don’t wear ankle boots with skirts because I feel they draw attention to my wide calves. Maybe I’ll say screw it and give it a try this fall.

IT WORKS! and if you are going to feel cranky and rule breakin’… you picked prettier ones than pjs in public, sweat pant suits, or visible muffin top. some of my no nos.

Ah, Sal, thanks for being so human. We all have these days. And guess what, you look fab, smiling through. And thank YOU for the link to the Desigual sale at Ideeli — have you seen the Veronik jacket? So cute. And the Multi Carry dress, and . . . .

Well, it may be breaking your personal fashion rules, but I love the outfit! The graphic tshirt really looks great. Looks like a good hair day too!

My mother insisted that red and pink clash and must never be worn together. I know it’s silly. Afterall, it’s monochromatic. How can it clash? I try and try, but I can’t break that rule.

Strangely enough, the one rule I cannot ever seem to break comfortably is mixing gold and silver jewelry. Even to the extent that if the anchors of something beaded or colorful are silver, I won’t wear gold elsewhere. And I’ve seen two toned jewelry but I’ve never cared for it. Not sure why this is an issue for me.

Thank you! I’ve totally been having a somebody else’s blues week, and I was at a loss as to how to describe the feeling.
Personally I find the jeggings look really good in this outfit, the dark wash really helps.

I dunno about personal style rules, but I love stretching the dress code at work. I feel like I can get away with crazier stuff because I’m one of the youngest employees, but I do try to keep my experiments mostly within the boundaries since I work at the front desk of our building. But I’ve definitely gone in wearing bright orange capris that might as well have been leggings. Good thing my legs are under a desk for about 90% of the day…

I like this outfit, even though you’re looking a little grumpy. I won’t tell you to cheer up, because I know it’ll happen in its own good time.

Aw Sal, you don’t really look all that thrilled either, but I think your outfit came out pretty cute. I’m used to seeing less substantial pants running around, and I think your sweater keeps everything appropriate.

I had some personal style rules, but really they go out the window all the time. I just wear what I’m comfortable with. Some days I’m cool with one thing, the next I feel exposed. So I just go with my gut.

i wear my jeggings how you wore yours today pretty much all the time, unabashedly. although, i can’t tell from the picture if yours are like this or not, but i only really buy/wear the ones that are more structured on top and have five pockets and a button fly like real jeans. if they had waists like regular leggings i’d probably not do that.

as far as fashion rules that i break, this isn’t really a “rule” but i tend to wear flats 90% of the time even though i’m 5’0. it’s bad enough trying to walk at a normal speed with my stumpy legs, let alone in heels! come to think of it, i probably dress in all sorts of ways short people shouldn’t. but i don’t really care!

I like scrunching the bottoms of skinny jeans to balance out a voluminous top, esp if I’m wearing slim flats. Having that extra bulk at the ankle makes me look less like lollipop-legs 🙂

  13. FutureLint

I think jeggings qualify as pants, especially because you don’t look like you painted yours on and your bum is still covered with the sweater! So jegging on! I love the long red sweater, makes me want to take a trip to Opitz!

  14. Anna

This outfit is in no way a compromise. It’s gorgeous!

As for the commenter whose mother told her not to mix red and pink — I do it all the time. Blue and green, too. I love those combos.

  15. Sara

Honey, I woke up with the blues of the whole block. Everyone better be happy that I’m wearing clothes. at. all. You look fierce. Go get ’em.

  16. kjlangford

Oh those aren’t jeggings no, no no, those are straight leg skinny jeans!

If yours are jeggings then a pair of mine that I’ve been calling “skinnies” are… well, definitely jeggings, and I just can’t bear that thought!

In all seriousness, though, I break the leggings rule all the time (though I do strongly believe in it). My current wardrobe is extremely capsule (travelling full time) and so the skinnies (ok fine, the jeggings) are my only denim, but I had to do it, they are just WAY more versatile than any of my flared leg jeans.

    PS- loved this outfit…

  17. Sheila

I break the Casual Friday rule of jeans and sneakers (at least in my office everyone wears them and pants that look like pj’s.) Instead, I step outside my comfort zone and try something new. Wear a skirt as a dress or mix different color combinations. Today I mixed strips and checks.

    Love your outfit.

  18. Leslie

I actually adore this outfit! It’s right up my alley and a look I wish I could achieve, myself. I tried on some jeggings the other day and they just looked all wrong on me. I probably should have tried them on with a tunic and maybe they wouldn’t have been so bad, but it spun me in such a foul mood that I didn’t like anything else I tried on, either. Yours look fantastic on you! I say, if you can pull it off, why not?
