Designer Discretion

This might just be the only piece of Burberry I’ll ever be able to afford. It’s a sunglass case, and I bought it on eBay for $9.95. Know what’s inside?

I got sick to death of those ridiculously delicate plastic coverings getting shredded by the contents of my purse or makeup bag, and simply didn’t want to buy something that LOOKED like a tampon case. So I began seeking an alternative. I knew I needed a case with a hard shell, something fairly large and long, and something that wouldn’t take up tons of room in my handbag. A standard eyeglass case would be too small, but this big ol’ designer sunglass case – meant for housing fly-eye sunnies – has plenty of room for three tampons. Plus I can grab it from my handbag and walk from my desk to the office restroom without giving myself away. Brilliant!

I credit myself with this idea because I’ve never seen anyone else do it … but then, I haven’t met everybody yet.

The only thing is, with something that cute, someone is going to ask to see what’s in it. I mean, carrying your glasses to the ladies room with you? Not that you should be embarrassed or anything, but you might be asked what’s really in there? It IS decidedly cute and stylish.

I did this in middle school and high school, and it worked great! So perfect for keeping in your backpack to avoid the unforgiving eyes of my male peers. (Ugh).

But then I went to college, and spent a semester buying my own tampons…and my reaction was forget this! I’ve used a keeper for six years now, and my pocketbook loves me for it. There’s also the whole sticking bleached cotton up there thing that grossed me out. And cotton is a water-heavy pesticide-heavy crop as well. So I took the plunge, and haven’t looked back.

…there is a bit of a gross factor there, I realize. But tampons were really gross to me too, as were pads. I’m a biologist and a feminist, so this isn’t a “hate my body” thing – it’s more of a recognition that periods are messy, and nothing can really take that away. But the keeper at least saves me money and is a lot less damaging to the environment. I can live with that.

OMG!!!! Burberry stuffed with tampons!!! That’s just too much!!! Well done!

I won’t be picking out this one, lovely Sal! I’m such a menstrual crazy-scheduled person, I can’t make a routine out of it. Anyway, gettin back to Burberry, I really, really am a big fan! The way they brought that ol company around and rejuvenated the collections, it’s just wow!

Applicator tampons don’t really exist here in Australia, I don’t think I’ve seen a box of them since the early 90s at least. So our tampons are tiny wee slippery suckers who can be easily coralled in a little purse or just in the little box they come in. I’ve always wondered why the applicator took off in the US but not here. Theories?

    Meanwhile, very ingenious solution!

I used to always use a big old Chanel sunglasses case to tote around stuff for nights out, but tampons? I think not! Great idea!

I love Burberry, but I’ve never found anything by them I could afford.

This is definitely a stylish and practical way to keep feminine necessities on hand.

I have a tin with cowboys on it that a Fossil watch circa 7th grade came in… it’s terribly cute and perfectly fits four tampons. Oh poor little rough and tumble cowboys, guarding my tampons with their lassos, spurs, and holstered guns…

actually, that’s a good idea – and stylish too!

if I didn’t already have one of these, I’d definitely be stealing your idea!!!

Oh my God, at first I thought you were saying it ARRIVED with tampons in it. BWAH HA HA HA HA!

  12. The Raisin Girl

I will SO steal this from you. Except…now where will I put my sunglasses? 😛

I think I have a Star Wars tin that a watch came in somewhere that I could use for this. It’s the right length, anyway.

I love Bridget’s comment – I have a Divacup myself (same idea) and find that it’s completely discreet and eliminates the need for any clever disguise-ery. Despite it being completely invisible, it is something that gives my personal style so much more life because I don’t have to worry about all the things I worried about toting around tampons and I think it’s just about confidence and independence. 🙂

I actually bought a specially made tampon case – quilted black fabric – in the Target Dollar Spot years ago but this may be better.

One of those inventions I wish I had thought of Sal!

Hahaha, great idea. But I’d personally be drawn to peeking inside a Burberry case. Ah, whatevs it’s great!

This made me laugh. I use a soft case for my lady stuff. Ironically, it now serves ALSO to hold my glasses since I lost my hard case for those. So, my glasses case is a glasses case again (and then some). XOXO, MissAmy

I only use O.B. tampons- they are literally less than 2" long… so they can be hid, ANYWHERE!

  18. Nadine

Sal, darling, your tampons are HUGE. (I think it’s an American thing.) ‘Pons you can hide in your closed fist are much better, trust me.

well, i don’t store my tampons in a sunglass-case, but i do store my to-go-sewingkit in one. my tampns i have in a case that was from the beginning a case for hankerchiefs.

Ahahahah you are brilliant AND stylish and I love it!

You think you are sooo funny including that link, Sal. I actually have a "Vinnie's Tampon Case"!! I'm lucky- I basically am never in a situation where I truly have to hide going to the bathroom with it, so I carry it for the silliness.

I don’t stash them in a designer sunglasses case, but because I am a dork I do tuck my tampons into a cute vintage eyeglass case that I picked up at a thrift shop for about 10 cents.
