Oh, this lovely, lovely dress. So ages ago I interviewed Zahra Aljabri about her website, Mode-sty. Recently, I ran into her at a conference and she said she still gets bales of traffic from that post, which just makes me unspeakably happy. In the post, Zahra mentioned Canadian clothing designer Jessica Rose and said that her layering dresses were a big hit with Mode-sty customers. And what with the circular nature of the world, Jessica reached out to me a few weeks ago to ask if I’d like to give one of her signature layering dresses a spin. And yes. Yes, I would.

So these dresses are two-parters – a sleeveless jersey sheath, and a draped top. You can, of course, wear them separately, but they’re fantastic for cold weather wear because the pieces look amazing together and allow you to layer up and add warmth to your look. They’re all made in Toronto from 95% bamboo jersey, and I am head over heels for mine. Husband Mike has declared it his favorite dress of mine. Ever. And considering that it is a comfy, washable, flattering, artisan-made dress with sleeves, I think it might be in my top five, too.

You lucky Toronto folks can visit the Jessica Rose boutique in the Distillery District! Tell her I say hello!

Stunning! This looks exceptional on you along with the way you have accessorized it.

Wow, I want this dress so much. I might need to throw out the lbds I have in my closet and get this one of the layering dress options!

Stunning and, i fyou haven’t gotten hip to bamboo clothing – OMG! – begin now. I buy a lot of Yala (night shirts, leggings, I just got sheets – heaven on earth) which is all bamboo. I don’t wear dresses )I’m a jeweler) but this top over leggings!! Thanx Sally!

I tried out a few bamboo items of clothing and they have all pilled badly. Have you found the same thing? Perhaps I’m just buying poor quality bamboo!

As a designer, I fell in love with bamboo years ago, but when it was first introduced to the market, most of the knit textiles made with it did pill quite a lot- too much for me to even consider using it. The textile engineers at the mill I’m working with now have really done a great job at developing the design of the fabric to avoid this issue.

TOTAL CLASSIC. I could see how you could update this for every season and every decade, just through accessories/shoes/tights/hairstyle. Wish I could afford it now but will have to save up and keep it in mind for later!

It’s really cute and I love the idea. I can see why it’d be a favorite!

One question, as I think about purchasing my winter party dress for the year: how is the fit on the dress? Would you suggest sizing up? I have a large bust, and if your dress is pulling in the underarms, and showing the underlayer (underdress?) so clearly through the bust, I’m hesitant to take a chance on it myself.

Wow. That is one (or two) gorgeous dress and you look fabulous wearing it!

I love, love, love my asymmetrical dress from Jessica Rose! I don’t live too far away, and so am always happy to pop into her store in the gorgeous Distillery District. Wonderful to know exactly who made my dress, and where.
