I feel like nearly all of my online style consult clients end up with “magenta cardigan” on their shopping lists. And yet magenta cardigans are nearly impossible to find! Such a great piece to have in theory – since magenta works with jewel tones, pastels, brights, and neutrals – but most available cardigans are either too pink or too purple. I squealed with joy when I unearthed this one at a local thrift store. I’d rather it were a V-neck, of course, but I can make do.

Anything on your shopping wishlist that’s proving elusive these days? Are you hitting the thrift stores as well as traditional retail outlets?

I found a magenta cardi recently on consignment and love how much it goes with other colours. Looking fab with yellow, Sal!

I’m still looking for the perfect navy trenchcoat. Why should such a staple be so hard to find?

  3. Anamarie

Yes! Wide calf, black leather, pointed toe, 3″ heeled boots! I’m going crazy. Many search engines call 14″ wide calf. Mine are 15.5″ and I really don’t think that’s very “wide.”

I’m a bit freaked out! I’ve just added a cropped magenta cardigan to my shopping list this past week, having realised it would work perfectly with several items. Now you say they are nearly impossible to find… I feel a quest coming on.

Grey. The perfect shade of middling grey is missing from the stores, and from the fabric stores. And has been missing for at least 10 years.

I’m always looking for v-neck cardigans, period– any color! For some reason, I can never find them.

A shirt dress in a stiff fabric so it doesn’t cling that does NOT have pockets on the boobs and fits my chest. Seriously? It’s so classy and basic. Who are these people with such teeny chests…I’m a 36D and it’s like I’m sized out of most tailored clothes to fit my waist and hips. Meh. And as a gal with a chest I do NOT want or need pockets on my lady lumps. I LOVE magenta cardigans. And they are really hard to find! Yours reminds me of one I saw at BR last year and didn’t buy, oh the regret…..

I love that you found your elusive magenta cardigan at a thrift store! Thrifting is the best. And now I need to add “magenta cardigan” to my fall wish list.

I always scan for chambray blouses that are not “camp shirts” but rather something a little more flowy and girly, yet of that neutral work-horse fabric. Also – navy blue – in general. It’s never in the thrift stores. Does that mean its not in the retail stores? Or, as I deeply suspect, people hang on to their solid navy pieces in good fabrics. Even twenty years ago I remember my mom pointing at a navy long sleeve tee with a twist design worked into the front and telling me I needed to buy it because “you just never see those”. I reluctantly added it to my purchases and it’s proven to be a shirt I love, still have and wear. Everything else I purchased that day is long gone from my closet.

Also, tank type tees with a wider strap to balance out larger bustlines. I see thousands of them with spaghetti straps. But very few with a nice 1″ wide strap. I just found one in navy – gasp – on ebay and snatched it up. It’s Loft brand so maybe its because I rarely shop fast fashion. I tend to follow the “Overdressed” message and instead watch for things on ebay or thrift stores.

And I second Kerstin’s shirt dress need. I have one that I love – picked up for $1 at SA a couple of summers ago. It’s Old Navy brand. I wear it all the time and have searched and searched for something similar – no luck.
