As I’ve said before, summertime brings out my inner cowgirl, and although the weather is still remarkably cool I couldn’t resist pairing this chambray shirtdress with my trusty tan boots. The dress is new as I discovered that my old chambray dress is just too short. I have no idea if it shrunk, I grew, or my ideas about hem length have shifted, but it felt positively scandalous when I tried it on and has since been relegated to the consignment pile. This replacement was nabbed for a song at a Land’s End Inlet near my parents’ house.

This chunky necklace always draws comments and compliments, often from guys. I’m always flattered and a little surprised. It’s a big, bold piece but also very organic and a little gnarly looking. Not sure why it appeals to so many dudes!

Do you have any items that draw compliments from unexpected audiences?

Sal — I have that same dress. And I am totally going to cowgirl it up next time I wear it!!

Pretty! I would love to see more looks that work with cowboy boots. I have two pairs of honest-to-goodness cowboy boots that I love to wear all summer long. I’m always on the lookout for summer dresses that work with them that aren’t too short and don’t look too “country-fied”. It might not be a look for everyone, but it’s a look that seems to work for me.

Your old shirt dress has probably shrunk, Sal. Chambray is one of those fabrics that continues to shrink, kind of like some denim weaves. The reason I stopped buying Gap jeans so many years ago was because no matter what length they started, they always shrank up, shortening the leg. This may have improved since then, but I still have that prejudice against Gap jeans. Anyway, some weaves of chambray behave that way.

I have a pair of bright yellow peep toe pumps that always gets compliments from straight men!
