Farewell Mrs. Ro

We had to say goodbye to Rowan Kitty this weekend. I adopted her when she was five. She was 18 when she left us. We will miss her forever.

I will be back in a couple of days.

  38. Erika

Never easy losing a fur friend, no matter the circumstances or the number of animals in your life. They take a piece of our hearts, but still leave us the capacity to love again. Treasure the memories and be aware that making her death easy is the last act of love. Be kind to yourselves. With much sympathy, Erika (and Molly and Winston the dogs)

  39. hmbalison

The love of furry friends is so unconditional. They never leave our hearts, but their loss runs deep. Take good care of yourself. Thank you for sharing the beautiful photo of Ro.

Thanks for your kindness and understanding, everyone. Simon Kitty is purring in my lap right now, bless his little heart. I still feel absolutely gutted and miss Rowan so much, but she had a good, long run. Thanks again. Back soon.

  52. noblepower

So sorry to hear that she’s gone. 🙁 Our darling furry friends are never here on earth with us for as long as we’d like. The one silver lining is that they always live on in our hearts, and are therefore a part of us always, and so she shall live on in yours.

  53. Sallie

Sally-I’m so sorry about your Mrs. Ro. It’s very hard to say goodbye to a beloved pet. I had a kitty (Gumbo Ya-Ya) who looked quite a bit like Mrs. Ro. I still miss her…my thoughts are with you!

  54. Sophie W.

Sally, I am so sorry for your loss. There is a lovely poem by Thomas Hardy called “Last Words to a Dumb Friend” which always gives me comfort. He clearly loved his cat very much and understood this loss. Take good care of yourself, grieve, and remember that you have many friends who sympathize and understand.

  55. jb

I am so sorry for your loss. When our beloved kitty died our house felt so empty – even though there was still a dog and another “newer” cat with us. That is a lovely photo you shared. Take care

  56. Anna

Oh, Sally, I am so sorry you have had to say goodbye to Rowan. She has graced so many of your photos and clearly has been a much loved cat during her long life. I know very well how special cats are and how hard it is to let them go. Be well.

  57. Stephanie D.

My condolences, Sal : ( Sending positive thoughts your way, although I know all the positive thoughts in the world can’t erase the loss of a loved one.

  58. Leah

So so sorry! No many how many years we get to spend with these wonderful cats, it is just not enough. I take solace in the notion that the animals I’ve loved have changed me–for the better–and thus they live on past their time on earth. For whatever it’s worth . . .

  59. Debbie Roes

Sally, I was so sad to read of the loss of your dear Rowan kitty. I’ve enjoyed seeing the lovely photos you’ve posted of her and Simon over the years. I can tell that you and Husband Mike have given them both wonderful lives. Like you, I am a major cat lover. Also like you, I lost a very, very dear kitty not long ago. It was one of the hardest things I’ve had to go through, as this cat was like my child. I’m still tearing up as I type this and it has been close to two years now.

These beautiful and wondrous creatures leave imprints on our souls. They are so precious and provide us with unconditional love. We often spend more time with them than any humans, save perhaps our spouses. My kitties are my best friends and I cherish each and every minute I have with them. I despair that they don’t live longer. I know you had 13 years with your dear Rowan, but I know it wasn’t long enough.

In time, it will get easier. I made a memory book of my dear Puka and I still look at it often and remember the wonderful times I had with him. He will always be in my heart and I will love him until the day I die, as I know you will with Rowan.

Sending you healing wishes and peaceful thoughts and prayers. Not everyone understands the amazing bond we can have with animals, but those who do truly “get it” and wish you peace during this difficult time. Blessings to you. Take the time you need to heal and we’ll welcome you back when you’re ready.

  60. Krysta

I’m so sorry Sal! It’s never easy to lose any family member, including the furry ones. Take all the time that you need. *hugs!*

  61. LIz

You have my deepest sympathies. So hard to lose a beloved companion of so many years.

  62. LIz

When you are feeling a little less raw, see if you can find a copy of Cynthia Rylant’s book “Cat Heaven.”
It may make you cry but it is a beautiful book that pays tribute to the nature of these lovely creatures who agree to share their lives with us.

  63. Tabie

Sorry you lost your fur baby! Sending lots of love your way. I know losing a pet is hard. 🙁

  64. jamie

best wishes sally and mike. kitties are amazing creatures and very much become part of the family.

  65. Kirsten

So sorry for your loss, Sally. We lost our gracious old feline gentleman last year in May, and still miss him tremendously. Wishing you solace, and may Rowan’s memory be a blessing to you and Mike.

  66. Harper

Condolences and sorrow for losing Rowan. Losing our furry, feathered, scaled friends hurts new each time. It doesn’t get any easier because we love each one so deeply, for so many reasons, and each love is differently flavored but we remember its taste forever.

I’ve lost three beloved companions in the past year, and I’m facing terminal cancer that will claim a fourth within days, or maybe weeks.

There is no template because the ones you love are not a template. You do what you know is best, for each pet, each situation. Sometimes you don’t know, and it’s instinct, and you hold them in the middle of the morning, skipping work, because you just know it’s time.

You do what you must for the ones that you love.

  67. Jennifer Beresford

Thought with you Sal. Such a hard time. Gone, but never, ever forgotten. x

  81. Mary Ellen

Sally, I have no idea where this falls in the range of things that help in dealing with grief, but I share this in case it (or just the idea of it) lessens your pain, even if it’s just a temporary patch: http://pwow.me/1216Ym
