Fluffing Your Closet

closet space saving

Sometimes I realize things and I want to share them. And I think, “This is really simple and it’s highly possible that 99% of humans already know it.” But then I think, “If I just realized it, there could be others out there who haven’t yet!” And THEN I think, “I need to get out more.”

So here’s today’s possibly-overly-obvious closet organization tip of the day:

When you hang clothing and replace it in your closet, it is likely to get a little bunched-up. At a certain point, you will have washed, hung, and replaced just about everything in there, and all that bunching will add up. If you haven’t bought anything new but your closet is suddenly packed to the gills, take everything out and put it back in a few pieces at a time. Fluff out sleeves and smooth garment bodies flat. The simple act of undoing the natural re-hanging-related bunching will free up LOADS of closet space. You’ll see.

Always wise to do with folded clothes in drawers as well, because they droop/wrunkle as you rifle through them or take them out/put them back!
Loving your blog, by-the-by! The first one I check every morning!

    This is soo true.
I did it about 2 months ago… just took everything out, organized it by color and
it also helped me get rid of a few pieces.

Forgot to say, I also cleaned the rod the clothes hang from…. it was filthy.

Thank you so much for sharing it. I don’t know about other but it is defiantly helpful and new information for me.

Here’s my I-need-to-get-out-more secret: To ensure that I actually wear everything in my wardrobe, I literally take from the left and put back on the right, so it all gets rotated. It also ensures that what gets put back gets smoothed out as soon as it goes in because there’s always room on the right side.

@Sonia – I love the idea of rotation as a way of fluffing and making sure I see everything. I find that I stop noticing items when they sit in the same spot.

I have to do this with my drawers frequently- especially the ones with the little tank tops and underwear. I’d love a suggestion on how to store all my underwire bras- at my size they are too big to fit in the drawer well!

I’m with Sonia here – that’s a great way of getting rid of unnecessary clothes as well! I’m looking in my closet actively to see what I’m really wearing and making sure there’s enough space for it. My rule of thumb is that if I haven’t used something in one year (ok, exceptions do exist such as my wedding dress) it will fly out. Works quite well for me!

You also can “re-find” things by doing that. I know I’ve found a lot of stuff by refolding my drawers or reshuffling my closet.

About once a year – or anytime my closet seems out of control – I take all of the items our and rehang them in backward. I put them in the right way after wearing. Then I can always see what I’m neglecting that should either be worn or donated.

Great tip! Will definitely give that a try! Closet is rather jam-packed with all the thicker winter clothes! Thank you!
