Although I’m a big fan of pairing black with brown, I know it’s not for everyone; it can seem counter-intuitive to pair neutrals. But, I’d like to make the argument that caramel is more of a color and less of a neutral and therefore is perfectly okay to wear with black:

And in a fun print like this one, it’s more than okay, it’s great:

If you’re looking to try mixing black and brown, a print is a great way to go. And I also recommend looking past the brown found in the smallest pack of Crayola crayons. Instead, look to the 64-pack for inspiration in the way of burnt sienna, raw sienna and fuzzy wuzzy (a real color). Oh, and caramel, of course:

What about you, Dear Readers? What are your feelings on wearing black with brown?

Very elegant!
Thank you so much!
My feeling are (1)that you look absolutely fab, (2) that that top is really great, and (3) that brown and black are great together. I also like black and navy, black and grey, blue and brown, and brown and grey. But I find the last of these pairings by far the hardest to make work – when it does, boom!
Jessy, if you are having a difficult time making brown and gray work, have you tried different shades of brown? For example, camel and gray are fabulous together. Also, a taupe-y brown with gray undertones is very easy to work with gray. I am also a huge fan of any shade of blue with brown (like turquoise or aquamarine and of course, navy)! Have fun styling!
Yes, yes, yes on both the camel and gray and any shade of blue with brown!
Thank you! I also love brown and grey together and think Shelbee on the Edge’s advice below to try camel and grey is excellent. I love camel and grey together.
Black and caramel are one of the best combinations, in my opinion!
I agree; caramel is such a rich color, it looks great with black!
Love it, and I like all these unpredictable combinations. xo
I do too; unpredictable combinations are the best!
I routinely wear mocha with black in the fall and winter. You look great, by the way!
Oooh. Yes, mocha is another good brown to pair with black.
Thank you!
