Insomniac Sale Picks: Black and White Tops for Large Busted Women

*In this late-night feature – which will run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Rachel requested a few picks for black and white printed tops that will fit a large bust, so here we go:

3. Pleione Ring Print Crewneck Blouse

Pleione Ring Print Crewneck Blouse – was $52, now $31.20

So there are just about as many ways to have a large bust as there are women in the world. I’ve had to make some guesses here, and I’m quite sure that some of these would be disastrous on some of you! But hopefully a few will work. This one, for instance, has a high-ish neckline which may turn some of you off. But It has slight shaping at the waist and lacks Designated Boob Room, which can be a killer. Since it is sleeveless, it doesn’t chop up the arm line which can draw the eye to the bustline, and it would look great with a blazer if it’s just too formless for ya. Plus, oh my goodness, that ADORABLE print! Available in sizes XS- XL. Same print is available in black on white background.

Splendid Capri Stripe Dolman Top – was $74, now $39.99

Stripes are tricky, I know! But here’s why this top may work: Scoop necklines are always good, the top clearly has room in the bust area, sleeves fall well below the widest part of the bust and contrast cuffs draw the eye down. Also these stripes are grouped and are neither super wide nor super narrow, which makes them less likely to look distorted. Far from foolproof, but worth a shot if you’re a stripe lover. Available in sizes XS – L. Also comes in a pink/navy stripe.

Rose Farm Top – was $88, now $49.95

This mixed print top looks like it might have bust darts, but I’m not totally sure and since it’s got a great v-neckline, waist shaping, sleeveless design, and other bust-flattering features, I’m crossing my fingers. Reviews from customers with larger busts are favorable! Available in sizes XS – L, also comes in a red print mix.

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for black and white printed tops that will fit a large bust:

  1. BiuBiu – OK, I’ll admit that there aren’t gobs of prints on this site right now, but feel compelled to recommend it whenever fitting a larger bust comes up. This company is recommended by many bloggers as a fabulous resource for anyone with a large bust. Do check it out.
  2. New York & Co – This vendor is all about black and white prints right now, and many styles will suit a larger bust.
  3. LOFT – As with NY&Co, it’s gonna vary by style and by figure type, but there are prints aplenty in a few top styles that should work.
  4. And, of course, THRIFT STORES! It’ll be hit or miss, for sure, but black and white prints are classic and the thrift stores are brimming with them right now. ( can help you locate stores near you.)

How about White House | Black Market? They have some stuff on sale right now that I think would look great on large busts:

This dolman-sleeved chevron stripe tee would provide room for the girls (always extra bust room with dolman sleeves!) and chevron stripes are the perfect stripe for large busts:

This tee is jersey knit on front for a good fit and a gorgeous floral-print chiffon back. The petals on the front are few and high enough that it shouldn’t interfere with most large busts:

Finally, I have this top from Anthro and can vouch that it looks great on a lathe bust, although it is a low neck and I wear a cami underneath or a silk scarf over it:

I second the recommandation for BiuBiu! I wish I could get away with something like the first top. Alas, the high neck and loose fit would accentuate my top-heavy proportions, especially with dark fitted pants as featured… mmm maybe with white wide leg trousers?

  3. LaTonya

Sally, I can’t see the first one working. It wouldn’t work on me or the big bust or large back women I know. And the rail thin models don’t make me happy. Do these women have breasts? I know you don’t pick the models but plus size models would have been closer to what I envision.

LaTonya, as I said in the post none of these will be perfect for all women with large busts. Not all women with large busts are plus-sized, and Rachel isn’t which is why the picks don’t include plus-sized models or clothing.

In general, women with a large chest and a noticeably smaller waist – which may or may not be this person’s body type – are going to have an easier time with knit fabrics with some give. (I almost never find woven shirts that fit me.) I consistently do well at LOFT, straight Ann Taylor, and Banana Republic. Also, clothes in that price bracket on up are more likely to be lined which often helps.

Sally, your point wasn’t point is none of the models are busty. I’m not plus either but offerings don’t impress me they are made for large breasts. I’m no expert but I do have experience. I work in retail and help all size women find clothes that work for them.

OK, I definitely agree the models aren’t busty. Virtually no clothing models are busty, though, so I’m not sure how to control for that. And there are very few vendors who specialize in clothing for women with large busts.

I understand that you may disagree with these picks. I have tried to be as clear as possible that I know they won’t work across the board for all women with large busts. But please remember that I was asked to find black and white printed tops that will flatter a large bust that are all on sale and still available in a decent size range. With a large bust, there are so many factors that might make a print look off – stripes may bend, certain portions of the print may become distorted, dots may get pulled, certain motifs may draw lots of attention to the bust that is unwanted … I considered upwards of 50 tops and these were the best I could do within the constraints of this feature. They’re far from perfect, but they’re what I felt were some of the best options that are on sale at this moment and available in more than just a handful of sizes. To check all those boxes and also find models who have large busts would’ve made this a well-nigh impossible task!

As with all posts in this series, I recommend checking at the end for vendor picks, especially if the picks themselves don’t appeal. BiuBiu is renowned for being one of the best options for non-plus-sized women with larger busts. But they have nothing that is both on sale and black and white printed.

Having recently lost 130 pounds, I am just getting into the “straight size” market for the first time in my life, but I have a large bust — still a DDD cup — so this post is great for me! So far in my quest for clothes in this new shopping world, I have discovered that I love WHBM, Loft, and Ann Taylor. I seem to always find something flattering in those stores.

This black/white striped hardware detailed tee from WHBM is one of my favorites. I seem to always want to reach for it in my closet. It is on sale and very flattering with my large bust:

And you can shop WHBM by sale and black/white tops:

Thanks for always being an inspiration to me, Sally!
