Insomniac Sale Picks: Dresses with Pockets

*In this late-night feature – which will run on Tuesday and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Autumn requested a few picks for office-appropriate dresses with pockets, so here we go:

Land’s End Sleeveless Ponte Knit Sheath
– was $69, now $39.99
(select colors)

I own and LOVE this dress. (See it here and here.) The ponte is thick without being bulky, and holds up beautifully in the wash. Pockets are functional. This red and a lovely teal are on sale, while navy and black are currently full price … but Land’s End has frequent sales so sign up for their newsletter to find out when you can get those colors at a discount, too! Available in sizes 2 – 18, as well as petite and plus sizes. Size availability varies by color. LE also has this floral dress in regular and petite and this cap-sleeve printed dress in plus sizes, both of which include pockets.

eshakti knit dress

eShakti Knit Fit-and-Flare Dress – was $69.95, now $55.95

Nearly all of eShakti’s dresses come with pockets – there’s an option at the bottom of each product page that asks if you want to REMOVE them. And look! Sleeves! Although remember that most eShakto dresses can be customized to add/change sleeve style. This dress is available in this orchid as well as navy, red, and green in sizes 0 – 36W. This vintage-inspired knit dress is another favorite. I own and love it. The whole site is currently on sale, up to 70% off plus free customization.

gap denim dress
Gap Cap Sleeve Denim Dress – was $79.95, now $47.97
with code BIGTIME

While chambray might not fly in some offices and full-skirted denim shirtdresses might feel too casual in others, this dark-wash denim in a classic sheath style could easily be dressed up enough to pass muster in most workplaces. Add a blazer, necklace, and heels or flats and you’re good to go. This dress will also transition beautifully into fall and winter. Just add tights and layers! Available in sizes 0 – 20, including some petite and tall sizes.

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for office-appropriate dresses with pockets:

  1. eShakti – As mentioned above, at least 80% of their dress styles come with pockets. Sizes from 0 – 36W. This vintage-influenced one is my current fave, and the whole site is on sale now!
  2. Modcloth – Check hemline measurements for office-appropriateness, but lots of pocketed options available including this lovely teal sheath.
  3. Boden – Swooning over the fall line and loving the pocketed dresses like this jersey knit one available through 18L.

I have a friend who is currently searching for a Goretex jacket in petite-plus sizing – hips 48″ but arm length of a 5’0″ gal. Sale or no sale, do you have any suggestions? Needs to be a waterprooof-breathable and somewhat professional looking for meeting with clients. She can’t be the only one facing this challenge!

    • Sally McGraw

Eeep, that’s a tall order, Shannon! I’d start at Land’s End and L.L. Bean. LE doesn’t have water resistant coats in petite plus, but they do in plus and that might work better anyway due to the arm length concern. Bean’s has some good options, too.

Thanks for the suggestions Sally! She ordered one on clearance from LE as a temporary solution. Living in the rainy pacific northwest means that true gore-tex is a must but at this point anything is better than nothing. There is a local company that will custom design gore-tex jackets but the price is a bit daunting ($500CAD); however, it may be the only solution for a petite gal with wide hips!!!!

Other places to try: Cabelas, EMS, and REI. I was surprised at how many options are more professional looking and less sporty than I had expected. Most do have plus options, and even if they don’t have petite sizing most will specify the length of the jacket, which will help. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I hadn’t heard of EMS, so that’s a new one for me!

Recently I bought my first dresses from eShakti — after YEARS of longing — and I was so bitterly disappointed. The ONE measurement you can’t get custom-tailored is where the waist of the dress falls … and every single one of the three dresses I got was absurdly short-waisted. Worse than ModCloth, which seems to be run by people who actually do not possess torsos. Does anyone know whether eShakti has considered making the dresses adjustable for longer torsos too?

    • Sally McGraw

Sorry to hear that, Claudia! They definitely tend toward high waists, though there are some that are designed with a slightly lower waist. I’d definitely recommend contacting the company with your feedback. They tend to be very responsive.

I will let them know, Sally, though it’s hard for me to believe they haven’t heard from customers about this before. When I ordered, I even looked for styles that didn’t seem to have as sharply defined waists, thinking that might help – but no.
