Insomniac Sale Picks: Dresses for Short-waisted Figures

*In this late-night feature – which will run on Tuesday and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Heidi requested a few picks for dresses for short-waisted figures, so here we go:

Calvin Klein Solid Lux Fit & Flare Dress – was $128, now $67.99

So. Heidi didn’t mention her own figure-flattery priorities and short-waistedness will mean different things on different figures. I’ll offer a few options that will address different concerns. This dress features top-to-bottom seaming but lacks a designated waistline. If you’re long- or short-waisted, getting the waist of a dress to hit at the right spot can be tricky, and styles like this are a great alternative. This dress also has a full skirt, but the design causes the pleating to fall fairly low on the frame, which helps prevent crowding the figure between bust and hips. Available in this red and also in turquoise in sizes 2 – 14. Size availability varies by color. For $89.98 in blue, purple, turquoise, red, or black here. Also in red, black, purple, or blue in sizes 14W – 22W.

Eliza J Print Jersey Faux Wrap Dress – was $118, now $70.80

This dress has several things going for it: The crossover top is great for short-waisted gals with bigger busts, the faux wrap gently hugs the waist area without sharply defining it, and the self-tie can be omitted or placed anywhere along the torso line. If you’ve got a high waist that you want to accent, remove the self-tie and replace with a solid-colored narrow belt. Also in petites. This dress has longer sleeves, but a similar shape and design in sizes 0X – 3X. And this one has similar features but long sleeves.

Boden Print Tunic Dress – was $148, now $125.80
with code G9F5

Another dress with multiple design features that can work for short-waisted figures: This dress is a shift style that lacks a defined waist, it features hip-level pockets which draw the eye downward and create balance, and it has long sleeves which further balance a high waist. The pockets are low enough that you could add a belt without crowding. This is also a shorter length dress, which may be great for short-waisted petites. Available in sizes 2 – 16, including some tall lengths. This long-sleeved shift has some layered detailing, but a similar shape in sizes 14W – 24W. Also love this waistless, embroidered hem Boden dress for waistline balance.

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for dresses for short-waisted figures:

  1. J.Crew – Although there are some high-waisted options, J.Crew also stocks sheaths with no defined waist, drop-waist dresses, and other non-empire options.
  2. Eliza J – This line features loads of great dresses with waist shaping but no waistband. This 3/4-sleeve shift is gorgeous.
  3. Boden – Mainly because they carry lots of sleeved styles, like this darling shirtdress.
  4. And, of course, THRIFT STORES! Since secondhand shops will have items from years and decades past, you’ll have far more hem and waist options to choose from. (thethriftshopper.com can help you locate stores near you.)

  1. Not quite anonymous

I would be interested in seeing knit jackets on Insomniac Sale Picks–preferably something that works with business casual. It’s getting chillier here but not cold enough to break out the coats yet. Thanks!

YAY! Thank you!! I’m not sure about the shift, but I’m very excited about the first two. I will definitely be checking them out! Thanks Sally!

These are all gorgeous, too bad I have no idea what my body will look like in the next few months (end of pregnancy through post-partem.) As a short-waisted gal (and just generally short) I love Calvin Klein dresses. I don’t usually go for wrap dresses but that’s just so pretty.
