Insomniac Sale Picks: Perfect Striped Shirts

*In this late-night feature – which will run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Ashley requested a few picks for perfect striped shirts (Whew! Tall order!), so here we go:

Old Navy Striped Boat Neck Top – was $16.94, now $10.99

So. Perfect is relative. But my perfect striped shirt is a 3/4-sleeve boat neck with minimal detailing. The little buttons on the shoulders of this one are a perfect finishing touch – cute and fun without cluttering up the shirt. Available in XS – XXL in this navy, red, pale blue, and tan as well as a yellow/tan stripe.

JNY Sport 3/4 Sleeve V-Neck Striped Tee – was $32, now $12.40 – $15.35

If a boat neck doesn’t … float your boat (ha!), try a v-neck instead. This version looks a bit sportier due to the solid cuffs and trim, but still has a classic look and feel. Available in this green as well as a black with thin white stripes, sizes S – XL.

Lole Spin Scoop Top – was $70, now $28

This one is a bit of a wild card, I know, but I just LOVE it. It comes in this magenta, black, and turquoise – all of which are just darling. Something about that little faux cami peeking out really appeals. Available in XS – XL.

Splendid Oatmeal Rugby Stripe Boatneck Top – was $66, now $29.99

I’m throwing a bonus pick on the fire, here, because it’s a great option but only available in L and XL. Most striped tops are relatively thin stripes, but rugby stripes are another great option.

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for perfect striped shirts:

  1. Land’s End and L.L. Bean¬†– Both retailers offer stripes year-round in a huge variety of sizes and styles. They were selling Breton tops before they became the hot ticket stateside.
  2. Gap – Predictable, I know, but two of my favorite striped shirts hail from the Gap. They do stripes right! In fact, this one is darned near perfect, but selling out fast.
  3. Ann Taylor – Surprisingly, this shop has several adorable stripy options right now.

I love stripes, I think a simple striped top with jeans and some ballet flats looks perfect for a casual, yet stylish look. I think half my wardrobe is stripes of some sort! I’m loving the ruby stripe boat neck top here.

These shirts are some of my favorite things to wear, any day! I have a very nice one from Land’s End Canvas, and I think I have to add the Old Navy one you’re showing here. Thanks!

I just found a classic Breton top in the Lands End department at Sears. Perfect fit, great heavy cotton jersey fabric, and it cost me $7.99! I actually prefer it to the APC Breton top I bought in Paris last winter for *a lot* of money.

Thank you, pretty! That was my request, and I do love that first Old Navy option a LOT (and this may be the first time in my life I wasn’t drawn to the most expensive option first).

Hello! First time commenting; but I’ve been following your blog now for awhile and I love it. In fact, you have inspired me to go out and buy my first dress in years. Years! So thank you for that – with your sage advice and positive outlook in mind, I am actually enjoying trying to expand my wardrobe and experiment with caring about what I wear.

I do have a quick question: I love that boatneck t-shirt but anytime I try and wear such things my bra straps show. Do you have any advice for that? Should I go with a strapless bra? Or perhaps maybe a tank top underneath?

    Thank you so much!

    • Sal

Hi Noelle! Most boatnecks aren’t super duper wide, so you can slide your bra straps to the outer edges of your shoulders and keep them from view. If that fails, a strapless would definitely work.

Thanks so much for your kind words about my blog – and ENJOY that dress, my dear!

I bought an amazing striped shirt at Target a long time back. I like it because it has a “watercolor” look to it – the soft teal stripes are not exact, and it fits me perfectly. Doesn’t hurt that it matches all my accessories and shoes.

I also have a more traditional striped top (as in skinny perfect stripes) from Forever 21. The fit’s a little funny but I love it.
