Insomniac Sale Picks: Stylish Parkas

*In this late-night feature – which will run on Tuesday and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Amanda requested a few picks for warm but stylish parkas so here we go:

_9501495

BCBGeneration Packable Down Coat – was $240, now $159.90

Amanda specifically mentioned that she’d like to avoid looking like a Yeti, so let’s talk quilting. Down coats will be bulkier and more curve-obscuring if they have lots of space between quilted lines AND if those lines are horizontal. Shaped, slanted quilting like this will show your curves (or create some if you don’t have any yourself) and so long as you’ve got real down in there, you’ll be toasty warm. This coat is available in this gray as well as black in sizes XS – XL. Size availability varies by color. This similar style comes in four colors in sizes 1X – 3X. (The Nordstrom semi-annual clearance is on, so poke around – I also loved this shaped down coat, but it’s only left in XS – M.)

eddie bauer parka

Eddie Bauer Essential Down Parka – was $159, now $109

Even better: Princess seams and smaller quilting near the waistline give this coat a great shape. It’s still slim near the hem, though, so arctic blasts won’t travel up into your privates. Real down, moisture repellent, and machine washable. Available in this red as well as black or white in sizes XS – XXL as well as petite, tall, and plus sizes. YES!

ck quilted puffer coat

Calvin Klein Hooded Down Puffer Coat – was $275, now $127.49
with code VETS

Yeah. I’m probably buying this one myself. Because it’s a KNEE-LENGTH DOWN COAT! It’s like the unicorn of coats these days. Plus it’s sleek, shaped, has a nice high collar, and there’s nothing remotely Yeti-like about it. Available in this brown as well as a lighter brown, gray, or black in sizes XXS – XXL. Also in black in sizes 0X – 3X. (Macy’s has a few longer down parkas, including this sleek packable puffer and this funky asymmetric maxi coat.)

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for warm but stylish parkas:

  1. Eddie Bauer – Modern, tailored options in regular, petite, tall, and plus sizes.
  2. Land’s End – The LE definition of “parka” is a bit loose, but some great quilted options available. This belted tulip-hem coat is eye-catching in regular, petite, and tall sizes.
  3. Nordstrom – Always a winner for outerwear selection. This tightly quilted down parka is super sleek.

I’ve got a request for a future insomniac sales pick: soft, scrunchable (or ruched-sleeve) blazers with wider sleeves. I’ve tried to buy a few, but they all have skinny, skinny arms! Please not only plus size options, for those of us whose upper arms are bigger, proportionally, than clothing manufacturers would like.

This was my personal quest this weekend, and Macy’s was the MOTHERLODE. Dozens of styles and colors, all of them a million percent off. there was a feeding frenzy in the coat section. I got a hooded, packable, flattering, black puffer with black hardware and zip pockets for $110. But Eddie Bauer is wildly on sale too. Whooo!

Awesome – glad you scored, Roberta! I actually ended up with a new down coat from Macy’s myself, thought it’s a Cole Haan one that’s sold out now. GREAT deals.

  3. Dust. Wind. Bun.

I don’t see it on the website, but last year in December or January, I think, I got a Land’s End knee-length (well maybe not on y’all non-weiner-dog-legs people, I don’t know) down parka in sky blue for $75 and it’s awesome. So anyway, they do good down-filled, the sales are coming soon, and sometimes interesting colors are out there.

Hi Sally, I’d love to see something on comfortable but pretty dress shoes. I have quite a few weddings and holiday parties to go to this winter and no shoes to wear. Also my feet are quite sensitive (flat, bunions) so I need shoes that are comfortable but still cute. Any ideas? Thank you!
