Insomniac Sale Picks: Unfussy Button-front Shirts

*In this late-night feature – which will run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Nola Mae requested a few picks for unfussy, lightweight white or off-white button-front collared shirts, so here we go:

Red House Ladies Herringbone Non-Iron Button-Down Shirt – was $105.98, now $44.95

I love the graceful collar and subtle herringbone texture on this shirt. It’s 100% cotton, which means it may wrinkle a bit more readily than versions with a hit of stretch, but layered beneath a blazer or sweater no one will be the wiser. Available in sizes XS – XXXXL in white as well as dark purple, black, steel blue, and apple green.

Nexx Roll-tab Sleeve Shirt – was $68, now $44.90

This version includes front pockets and the tabbed sleeves, so a few more bells and whistles than the option above. But the slim fit and classic collar make it a great, pared-down option. This shirt features knit side panels, which means it will skim curvy figures better than a solid woven! Available in sizes XS – XL. Also comes in red, green, yellow, and turquoise.

Poplin stretch dress shirt – was $26.50, now $22.53
WITH CODE ONEXTRA15 through 8/15

These codes that expire at midnight mess with my schedule! Posting early again tonight in hopes that most folks who might want to nab this deal can do so before the coupon expires. This basic white shirt is as clean and unfussy as they come. Gently shaped for a less clingy fit. Available in sizes XS- XXL in white as well as black, French blue, and gray.

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for unfussy button-front shirts:

  1. Banana Republic – My go-to for basic button-fronts. The “Fitted” style is designed for a slim fit and works best for women with smaller busts, “Tailored” fit accommodates larger busts.
  2. Express – Most of my thrifted button-front shirts hail from Express! Their styles are very slim, contain lots of stretch, and tend to run a bit long. Great for layering, if they suit your figure and taste. This is the basic model.
  3. J.Crew – Check the sale section, as everything at J.Crew can feel rather spendy. But button-fronts are a staple for this retailer, and they do ’em right.

I would love to see A-line skirts that can transition to cooler weather.
    Or, A-line dresses in petites.
You always come up with great things!

Talbots is the only place I can buy a button-front shirt that fits. I am short and busty with narrow shoulders. They are the only store that carries a 12 Women’s Petite, which is roomier than a regular petite. They are spendy-I usually order a few during the red hanger clearance. But the white ones never go on sale!

Also Carissa Rose. Not a brand that goes on sale, though.

And just quickly, since it seems like you might have been somehow frustrated by these picks, these posts are meant to be a small sampling of items that are currently on sale that fulfill a specific reader’s request. In an attempt to find affordable, on-sale items that are available in full or near-full size runs, I tend to stick to mall and department store brands and can’t often include petite, plus, tall, curvy, or other specialty sizes unless they’re specifically requested by the reader. It’s not an intentional exclusion, just the nature of this structure. And I talk frequently about resources for women of all figure types.

I’d love to see some “cheater” button up shirts. Ie: shirts that LOOK like button ups but are actually sewn shut/a single piece, etc. The only button up looking shirt I’ve been able to wear to work is a shirt from Express that was a single piece shirt with buttons sewn on purely for decoration. I like it because it more closely resembles what my (predominately male) officemates wear but there is NO gapping at the bust and NO excess of material around my waist. I’d like to see more shirts similar in concept. : ) Oh, and ones that are not thin (why are so many blouses semi-see through. Hullo, bras! And yes, you can wear camis but with many then you just see the cami which, imo, is nearly as bad.

Oh gosh. I’m not sure I’ve seen any button-fronts that are actually sewn shut. I’ll keep my eyes peeled. Have you checked out The Shirt? There are hidden buttons between the visible placket buttons which reduces gapping A LOT!
