Insomniac Sale Picks: Warm Sweaters

*In this new late-night feature – which will run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Ashley requested a few picks for warm, budget-friendly, sweaters and cardigans, so here we go:

Plaited shawl collar cardigan -was $79.95, now $41.99
when you use code GAPSNOW to get an additional 40% off

I’m a huge fan of long cardigans, and completely adore the details on this one: That nice deep v-neckline, cozy shawl collar, asymmetric button closure, and pointed hem detail. Cripes, I think I’ll have to buy one of these for myself! Since this is a nylon/acrylic blend, its warming properties come from length and design rather than natural materials, but still a very stylish and affordable bet.

Nixon Almost Cropped Crew Sweater – was $54, now $43.99

HM hates on overly-long sleeves, but I’m a fan. They don’t look super professional, it’s true, but as a gal with constantly cold hands I can’t help but gravitate toward sweaters that might actually keep my digits warmish. (You can also cuff the sleeves on this sweater without making it look awkward – bonus!) The sweater itself looks fairly thin, but the relatively high neckline and engulfing sleeves make me think it’ll still be a good option for cold days. Also available in green/gray and black/white stripes.

Cashmere ribbed tunic sweater – was $114, now $61.19

So I know this option isn’t exactly dirt cheap, but believe me when I say that cashmere sweaters are WORTH THE MONEY. They are equal parts soft and warm, and if you live in a wintry climate I would recommend tracking down at least one that you adore with your whole heart. This one is a longer length with a nice big cowl, so it’ll engulf you in warmth. 100% cashmere. Also available in dark taupe and a heathered evergreen.

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for great budget-friendly, warm sweaters:

  1. Old Navy – Always a great source for basics at rock-bottom prices. My experiences with Old Navy sweaters have been extremely good, though I notice they rely on manmade fibers to keep prices low.
  2. J.Crew – Hit up the sale section for some sweet deals on pullovers and cardigans – full-priced offerings are still spendy, but there are some gorgeous wares in clearance right now.
  3. And, of course, THRIFT STORES! Cashmere, wool, angora, cotton, silk – they’re all there. Thrift stores are absolutely overflowing with sweaters right now, so do poke around. (¬†can help you locate stores near you.)

Great picks! Most of my sweaters are thrifted. I just found an Eileen Fisher cashmere turtleneck at Goodwill, and I want to wear it every day!

They’re definitely more of a layering piece, but Macy’s has ‘Charter Club’ cashmere crewnecks, turtlenecks, and cardigans going for $39.99 right now. I tried them on on Black Friday, and if any of the colors had remotely suited me, I would’ve snapped one up. So warm for their weight!

Ooh…I used to have a non-cashmere sweater that looked exactly like the one you showed here, in cranberry red with the cowl neck. I LOVED it! I’d really like to have another in cashmere. I’ll look into it…thanks for the link!

I’ve had amazing luck with sweaters on e-bay this year. I just got four turtlenecks, either new with or new without tags, all merino, cashmere or lambs wool for less than $80. SHIPPED. I wish more places still did the washable merino sweaters that were popular a few years back. They held up so well and not having to dry clean them was awesome. The slim fitting ribbed t-neck ones I got from LL Bean are still base layer staples for me.

I would love to see the following insomnia sale items:
    Petite dresses (long sleeves!)
    WARM tights and socks
Fabulous outdoor accessories (hats, gloves, etc)

I’ve actually found a surprising batch of warm sweaters on sale at Forever 21. And they’re not high-school appropriate. They’re grown-up office appropriate. And WARM! (It’s getting freeeeeezing here in Chicago.)

Thanks so much for the tip on J.Crew clearance. I’m always on the lookout for anything on sale there!! (they’re a huge source of sartorial inspiration for me, but my checking account isn’t the biggest fan)

I’d be interested in boot-cut leggings or any sort of skinny pant that fits well in the thigh but that doesn’t taper at the ankle (sometimes they are called “leggings” and sometimes not, which is why they are hard to locate!).

The Gap sweater is on sale now, too! The one you pictured is $69.99, and another color is $59.99. There are lots of sizes left, too. I used your promo code and bought one in the neutral color (with contrasting striped collar and cuffs) for $35.99 total. Thanks for the tip!

You have completely turned me into a cashmere fan! I didn’t own any before reading your blog, but just this winter so far have bought 3!! All thrifted, all perfect, an all for less than $10 each. I’ve also gotten 2 amazing, soft boiled-wool jackets for about the same. Love! I am warm, cozy, and dang–I look good!!
    Thanks Sal!

Amy, YAY! Cashmere is absolutely amazing, isn’t it? All the warmth of wool without the scratch, all the softness of silk but cozier! Thrifted cashmere is the best. Older weaves are often better constructed, and therefore a better value, than new.

      • Amy

Yes, I can’t believe the quality in the older sweaters. The great thing is that most cashmere sweaters seem to be pretty classic in style, too. I do need to pick up a detergent made just for cashmere, now, since I rarely want to wear anything else!

Aaaahhh….sweaters…we’ve FINALLY had some sweater weather here in Texas! I shop Kohls for my sweaters…
