Insomniac Sale Picks: Wide-strap Maxi Dresses

*In this late-night feature – which will run on Tuesday and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Alison requested a few picks for maxi dresses that can be worn with a regular bra, so here we go:

asos maxi dress

Blue Vanilla Cowl Neck Maxi Dress – was $85.74, now $53.35

Alison specifically asked for no stripes, but I’m hoping this abstract black-and-white print isn’t too stripy-looking for her taste! I feel like this dress could use a belt at the waistline, either in black or a punchy contrasting color. But it’s got wide straps, a cool cowl neckline, and high back to cover your bra. Available in sizes XS – L. Also love this geometric B&W print maxi with asymmetric skirt detailing. Here’s a similar style in sizes 14W – 24W.

mod o doc orange maxi dress

Mod-o-doc Shirred Crossover Hi-Low Dress – was $130, now $64.99

This neckline might be a little revealing for some folks, but is still well above plunge levels and ever so pretty. Straps are nice and wide and the dress features a high back as well. This could dress down with a jean jacket and gladiators, or dress up with a bib necklace and heels. Available in sizes XS – XL in orange, and S in black for $39.99. Here’s a similar style in six colors in sizes 1X – 3X.

alternative apparel hibya dress

Alternative Apparel Hibya Dress – was $112, now $61.99

I love this option because it features plenty of coverage up top and a loose, comfortable shape but also has that fun side slit. It looks fairly high here, but could certainly be stitched shut an inch or two if it feels too revealing. This black version is only available in XS – M, but there are two styles of an understated tie-dye print in XS, S, and L here and XS – L here in blue tie-dye. This dress has a similar shape and slit in sizes 1X – 3X.

melrose cap sleeve maxi dress

Melrose Cap Sleeve Maxi Dress – was $100, now $74.99

I’m sticking this one at the end because it’s sold out in many sizes, but SO elegant. Spendy for a JC Penney find, but incredibly versatile: Wear it with flat sandals and a rugged cuff for day, then switch to heels and dressy jewelry for evening. I’m drooling over this dress. Seriously. Available in sizes 6 – 14. Also love this ruched coral maxi dress from the same designer. (This dress is a similar color and also features cap sleeves in sizes 16W – 30W and petites S – XXL and regular XS – XXL. Not as unique or graceful, but still a good option.)

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for wide-strap maxi dresses:

  1. Karen Kane – A few thin straps in there, but most maxi dresses will accommodate a regular bra with no showage. And they do plus versions of many dresses, too.
  2. Old Navy – Alongside strapless and spaghetti strap styles, ON has many that will cover bras like this cute high-low hem dress.
  3. Land’s End – Just a handful of styles, but all strap-covering. Love the tulip hem on this one.

I’m 5’0 and I wish I could wear maxi dresses and skirts. But even the ones in the petite section are too long. Before you say it, I have a maxi skirt I’ve been meaning to take to get altered for months, but somehow it has never happened.

I often feel frustrated by the plethora of spaghetti strap maxi dresses in the shops. I am just not a spaghetti strap person and don’t even own a strapless bra. Braless is not an option either. These are great finds and I particularly love the JC penny dress. I own two maxi dresses, one has short sleeves and the other is sleeveless and I love them. I love the first two dresses you have here also, though I find the high low hemline, even when it isn’t really extreme, feels a bit too fancy for every day wear.

I’m the one who originally made this request on FB, and I just wanted to say that I think you did a great job! Thank you so much!

I would love to see a feature on where to find high-waisted shorts! Bonus points for any pairs made for gals with long torsos. These can be very tricky to find, despite being in style this summer!
