And although the concept made me cock my head initially, the article is pretty amazing in its reinforcement of exercise as a practice that benefits human beings of ALL shapes and sizes. “… research shows that people who are overweight or even obese still can be fit. Studies at the Cooper Institute in Dallas have found that it’s better to be fat and fit than thin and sedentary.” Plus there are weight classes in boxing, wrestling, and other sports … why not running? Your thoughts?

    i found a pair of overknees that go in the same direction as the ones in the outfit you linked to. rough leather in a rusty red tone, chunky heels – you can't get much further away from pretty woman with a pair of overknees. i'll buy them if they are still available next month =)

    Thanks Sal on the OTK boots. I have been obsessing over them but haven't decided on a pair yet. Just yesterday I stumbled on your Pleaser OTK boots outfit and love that style of boots though it is almost thigh high and seems more difficult to style in a decent manner than just an OTK style. Would love to see other ways you would style those boots for this Fall to get some inspiration.

    Thanks for the link roundup. (This is one of my favorite Friday afternoon/evening activities, reading all those great links).

    I was particularly interested in the health blogger Marie Claire article. I read it and also read each of the featured bloggers rebuttals. But the one part that sticks out the most is the following quote from Marie Claire:

    '"People can dabble in eating-disordered behavior without quite meeting the diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder," says Dr. Ovidio Bermudez, medical director of the Eating Disorders Program at Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Bermudez has seen an uptick in patients with "subthreshold symptoms," who show some eating- or exercise-disordered behavior without having a full-blown illness. The blogs appear "pro-healthy eating," he says, but "the compulsiveness and lack of self-care" they exhibit are worrying.'

    That part struck me the most because once upon a time ago, I was there. On paper I was as healthy as can be – bmi, diet, exercise – but the obsession with "health" was actually incredibly unhealthy and hurting me the most. I couldn't eat a piece of gum without tallying those 5 calories into my daily total. It took over my life – and yet, I was physically fit and getting exactly the correct amount of protein, fat, carbs, fiber, vitamins daily. It's worrying to me to see bloggers (and some friends) out there exhibiting a similar obsession that I recognize. And yet, it wasn't until I "recovered" that I see how unhealthy I was.

    This is a long post, but I do feel quite strongly on this topic. i think it's important to recognize that you don't have to have textbook bulimia or anorexia to have an eating or exercise disorder. I want to do my homework and check up on some of these blogs and compare it to the reported MC article, as well as read some articles on "eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS)." I'm no psychologist or specialist, I just know where I've been. It's something I'll be thinking about.
