I saw Autostraddle on a “best of” list somewhere, and am totally sold. Mission says, “Autostraddle is an intelligent, hilarious & provocative voice and a progressively feminist online community for a new generation of kickass lesbian, bisexual & otherwise inclined ladies (and their friends).” Includes almost daily outfits from their “Straddler on the Street” column!

Ground has been broken: Cabiria is the first plus-sized line to be shown during the official New York Fashion Week. YES! And the garments are so, so, SO gorgeous.

And the funniest thing I’ve seen all week: Jimmy Kimmel’s Lie Witness News interviews folks in front of Lincoln Center about NYFW designers and garments that don’t exist. And they totally pretend to know what they’re talking about. I’m a huge fan of Willy Loman’s designs myself …

And speaking of kisses, this amusing infographic offers advice on how to approach the berry-stained lip trend, with product recommendations at the end.

Since we’ve talked recently about permission, I was especially moved by this piece which offers permission to love and accept your body, just as it is, right this minute.

Anyone else watching Orange is the New Black? This post highlights why the show is groundbreaking and encouraging, and also where is is lacking. (I’m plowing through the series myself and mostly enjoying it.)

    Love, love, love the funny morning hair. I usually look ay myself in the morning and say, “Yikes! You look terrible!” I am going to take your cue and enjoy a good laugh. Thanks for reminding me to love myself and the funny things my hair does while I am asleep!

    While I agree that a lot of “fitspiration” stuff is OTT, I take pretty strong exception to equating it *all* with pro-ana mindfuckery. (Excuse my language, but I have no idea what else to call pro-ana.) Yes, it’s ridiculous to encourage people to work out until they puke, It is by no means ridiculous to tell people that vigorous exercise may involve pain. (The important element here is that there is a difference between “ahhh I’m working really hard really hard” muscle pain and “oh crap this is leading to injury” pain. With the latter, you immediately stop. The former just means you’re testing your limits, and hopefully redefining them.)

    Saying that all encouragement for exercise is the same as pro-ana stuff is both offensive and self-defeating. I hate, hate, hate the idea that body acceptance cannot include a commitment to health and strength. I loathe the idea that strength is about conformity (for women? LIKE HELL IT IS), and that exercise is the same as some fad diet. I absolutely, categorically refuse to cede exercise and fitness over to the thin police. This attitude seems to be increasing (complete with the paradox that “body love” must somehow involve ignoring your body’s needs), and it freaks me out.

      I agree completely.

      Yes, some of the fitspiration is sending a bad message. The images of women posed like porn stars, in skimpy “workout” clothing and holding weights, for example, don’t send a great message.

      However, some of the messages and images are inspirational for those of us looking to test the limits of what our bodies can do. I’m not fond of pushing myself till I puke, and I certainly won’t push myself to the point of real injury, but I like to dig deep and discover that I have something more inside me, when I thought I was finished.

      I have a Pinterest “fitspiration” board, and the only women I’ve pinned are some of my favorite movie and TV icons (think Katie Sackhoff as Starbuck and Linda Hamilton from Terminator 2). I’ve also got an image of an older man who’s still completely ripped, captioned “Growing Old is not for Sissies”, and a simple “No one is impressed with how good your excuses are” (this saying is not coupled with an unrealistic, scantily clad woman). Add a few of my favorite professional cyclists, and I’ve got a board that inspires me to workout even when I’m feeling lazy.

      I don’t think we should condemn the entire category of fitness inspiration because some of it sends a bad message.

And the Lie Witness has given me a huge grin before going out the door. Oh, and your were wonderful on the Morning Show. I have a moto jacket in cotton and one in cord, which I thrifted and love. Thanks for sharing these good reads.

    I got a good read on who had healthy attitudes to weight, when I lost weight due to crohn’s disease, medication side effects, and probably some depression related to that first thing. There were people who said, admiringly, “you’re so thin,” and people who asked if I was ok. The people in the second group ended up being an amazing source of support, kept feeding me, and encouraged me as I worked my way back to remission and healthy weight (and putting on weight is easily a mind-f-ck in our society, so this was really helpful).
    So yeah, healthy attitudes to weight help yourself, and let you help others around you.

    Woohoo for your tv segment! I really enjoyed learning about this new trend, however timeless 🙂 I don’t think however, that I would wear a motorcycle jacket. My daughter is sporting a grungy look at 15 with skinny jeans. We went to a thrift store and found a mock-army shirt with RHCP on it, she wears it everywhere with colorful skinny jeans and random tees. Its funny to think I too had the grunge look back in my Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Punk phase. Now I’m happy with jeans, tee’s and a cardi with flats or trainers. And the whole idea of Fitspiration is feeding into the poor body image mindset. Looking at those weird images/empowerment messages makes me feel bad about myself. I don’t want to look like those women, I just want to be happy and healthy. We need Body:Happy images/messages.
