I’ve long loved the rugged, weather-beaten look of waxed canvas, but will admit that when I bought my J.W. Hulme tote a few years ago, I wondered if it would get much use. Waxed canvas tends to be a bit sporty looking, and sporty I ain’t. But the blue bag stayed in regular rotation, I still adore it … and this year I found myself searching for a similar bag that would work with my black-heavy wardrobe.
As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, I found Rustic River Gear through their now-empty Etsy store, and inquired about getting the tote you see here made with silver hardware. I got into a long online conversation with the lovely owner, Tim, and eventually found myself at a business lunch offering to connect him with various local boutique owners and sustainability-minded bloggers. Tim made my bag with his own hands, and bent to my request for silver hardware, but is still just BURNED that he couldn’t find coated-brass fittings that were made in the U.S. for every single piece. This is a small company out of St. Joseph, MN, that is dedicated to quality craftsmanship and keeping every bit of the process and materials domestic. So, ya know, I’m a fan.
And I realize that $180 isn’t, technically, cheap.* But this bag is quite similar to my J.W. Hulme waxed canvas tote that retails for $395. Both are handmade in my home state, but honestly? The Rustic River bag is better quality. Sturdier, slightly larger, and is clearly gonna last FOREVER.
Rustic River Gear also does boat covers, fish houses, and several other gorgeous bag styles. If you love the rugged look of waxed canvas as much as I do, please take a peek at their wares! And don’t forget to use code SALLY for 10% off your order!
*They also do a smaller version for $135.
