Reader Request: DIY Alterations

diy clothing alterations

Reader Patricia had this request:

Can you maybe talk a bit about DIY clothing alterations? I’m not sure if that’s something you do with your own clothes often, but I know I’ve seen you recommend snipping off belt loops and the like… what options do you tend to utilize in terms of making off-the-rack clothing work better for you (either on your own or with tailoring, although I know you’ve already written a few great posts about tailoring)? Is it worth it buying something not-quite-perfect and making it your own? read more

Reader Request: When Matchy-matchy Makes Sense

matchy matchy

Reader Patricia had this request:

I know you mentioned a little while ago that soon you’d write a post about the benefits of matchy-matchy — yes please! I’d also love to see that expand into something about the different attitudes and situations when matchy-matchy works, as opposed to more contrast (if that makes sense?).

I must’ve been born too late, friends, because 50’s style matchy-matchy STILL makes more sense to me than looks that “go.” Pretty much across the board. I feel that matched accessories create unity and visual harmony, and that striking the right balance of complimentary but different accessory colors is often more trouble than it’s worth. Neat, harmonious, unifying. read more

Clothing Moves

Your clothing and accessories will shift around throughout the day unless you hold perfectly still. This happens to everyone, and is totally normal!

Two of the most common questions I get on my outfit posts are as follows:

  1. There are no belt loops on that skirt. How do you keep your belt in place?
  2. How do you keep your scarf from shifting around?

Answer to both: I don’t. I don’t keep my belt in place and I don’t keep my scarf from shifting around. Because barring use of staples and glue,* I really can’t. I feel like these questions represent some of the myths that have been unintentionally perpetuated by style blogs: That some women hold the secret to a perfectly styled and utterly immobile scarf. That some body types can keep a belt in place without loops. It’s just not true, friends. In these photos I am standing relatively still after having adjusted my outfit to look as I wish it to. And even then I sometimes have to fuss with my belt or scarf after a photo or two! Clothing and accessories move around. Unless you work as a Live Mannequin, yours will shift, too. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. read more
