Sometimes I realize things and I want to share them. And I think, “This is really simple and it’s highly possible that 99% of humans already know it.” But then I think, “If I just realized it, there could be others out there who haven’t yet!” And THEN I think, “I need to get out more.”
So here’s today’s possibly-overly-obvious closet organization tip of the day:
When you hang clothing and replace it in your closet, it is likely to get a little bunched-up. At a certain point, you will have washed, hung, and replaced just about everything in there, and all that bunching will add up. If you haven’t bought anything new but your closet is suddenly packed to the gills, take everything out and put it back in a few pieces at a time. Fluff out sleeves and smooth garment bodies flat. The simple act of undoing the natural re-hanging-related bunching will free up LOADS of closet space. You’ll see.

I offered closet consultations and personal shopping services for nearly eight years. Know how many clients hired me to do personal shopping only? Less than 20. Know why? Because I insisted on doing the closet consult first, and every single closet consult client I’ve worked with has finished up with more than a dozen complete outfits, many of which incorporate underutilized pieces, closet orphans, and long-forgotten items. I adore shopping, and my personal shopping excursions were a BLAST. But I believe quite firmly that before you buy anything new, you should be certain you’re making the most of your existing wardrobe.

I don’t know quite how to phrase this, but I’d love a post on how to shop for those items that make you feel insecure. For example, I’m mostly a wearer of skirts and dresses, but I want to incorporate more trousers into my wardrobe. However, while I’m familiar and comfortable enough with my body in skirts and dresses to make shopping for those items straightforward and pain-free, shopping for trousers fills me with angst because it highlights those parts of my body I haven’t quite got to grips with (my thighs, mostly, which are the reason why I find it hard to get trousers to fit), and also because I find the sizing (with waist measurements and hip measurements and leg measurements and all of that) confusing. As a result, I tend to either get upset or give up very easily. But I want to overcome this, not least because my Dream Jeans are on their way out and I can’t find any more of the same brand and I want to be able to find some replacements!
