Closet Alternatives

No closet? This post offers alternative ways to store and display your clothes!

Discussions of wardrobe organization always center on closets. How big is your closet? What kind of shelves and racks are inside? What gadgets do you use to keep it in ship shape?

But many of us have dinky, cramped, turn-of-the-century closets (see me waving my hand in the air?), and are forced to find other, creative ways to store and organize our goodies. Here are some of the most common non-closet clothing-storage solutions:

Armoires

These monsters are, essentially, freestanding closets and are sometimes referred to as “wardrobes.” What better place to stash your clothes? The one shown above is among the most common layouts, with a cupboard-like section up top that typically features a hang bar and a drawer or two below. I’ve got one with sliding doors on both sides and shelving above the hang bar, so there are definitely variations on the theme. read more

Reader Request: Morning Readiness

morning outfits

Reader Kantz dropped this one into the suggestion box:

I was wondering if you could talk about the getting ready in the morning routine. This year I have the resolution to always look my best every day but so far I have found that it takes time!!! Any ideas on how to achieve this?

When I worked in an office, I allowed a fairly small window of time for morning prep, mostly because I aimed to arrive at my office by 7:30 a.m. Back then, HM and I both rose at 5:50 a.m. and since he showered first, I ended up with approximately 45 minutes in which to shower, dress, and primp. Here’s how I crammed all of that into a relatively small amount of time. read more

Organize Your Wardrobe, Hone Your Style

organize wardrobe

As you stare into the depths of your closet, frustrated and overwhelmed, seeing racks of clothing and NOTHING you want to wear, you may be thinking to yourself:

  • Dude. I need to go SHOPPING.
  • I must have crappy taste. How can I hate everything I own?
  • Naught but closet orphans in here. Sigh.

And yet, my guess would be that you’ve got loads of amazing duds, that your taste is spot-on, and that your items are just dying to be remixed. AND that all of these things would be crystal clear to you if you invested some time and energy in organizing your wardrobe.

What? NO! I’m not kidding! No wait, LISTEN.

If you can’t see it, you won’t wear it

In an ideal world, we’d all have Cher’s amazing closet organization system, complete with video touchscreen and electronic inventory. In the real world, we must find ways to keep our clothing relatively visible or risk erasing its very existence from memory. Obviously, you can’t keep every single piece in full view, but try to arrange your wardrobe so that you can see as much as possible. Or just a peek of each piece. Old standbys should be the ones tucked into the corners, while difficult and challenging pieces should stare you down daily until inspiration strikes. read more
