Reader Request: The All Black Wardrobe

How to make an all-black wardrobe chic and interesting

Reader Jen e-mailed me this request:

I write to you because the dress code at my [beauty] school is all black. I like black but don’t wear it very often because color makes me happier. I would love if you could do a reader request post about a few basic, reasonably priced black items that can be used to comprise a couple of different outfits. School only goes through February so cool weather clothing is ideal. Leggings are not permitted, except under dresses, and neither is denim. If you had some recommendations for a couple of outfits I would be very grateful. read more

Gracey Wears: Monochromatic Gray

I love color. Anyone who has ever seen my blog knows that I love color. And I love wearing multiple colors in a single outfit.

But, I also love a good monochromatic look because, while head-to-toe in a single color sounds boring, it doesn’t have to be.  And I think it can be a fun challenge to wear a monochromatic look that doesn’t make you nod off when looking in the mirror.

Take this outfit for example:

Fashion for Giants outfit featuring gray Old Navy moto jeans & a gray jeweled LOFT sweatshirt

Thanks to the shiny bits, there’s no nodding off here!

And that’s while wearing head-to-toe gray.  Gray, especially, can be a real snoozer of a color. But when you add in embellishments and metallic hues, it can also be interesting.  See? read more

Thrifting for Trends: Fall/Winter 2014 Edition

It’s time, once again, to examine the hot “new” trends for the season, and remind ourselves that fashion recycles EVERYTHING! Here are just a few of the garments, colors, and styles that are trending for fall and winter that you can easily track down at your local thrift and consignment shops. (Note that all of the on-trend items I’m wearing below have been thrifted. Already.)

Can a classic like plaid really be considered trendy? When it shows up in on dozens upon dozens of runway shows and subsequently FLOODS the mall stores, I’m answering with a resounding, “Yes.” But! Since plaid never really goes out of style, that means it’ll be plentiful on the thrift store racks, too. Classic tartans featuring red, black, green, and blue are always a safe bet, but feel free to spring for more modern iterations. Just be sure to pick a plaid that is dark-color dominant: White-backed plaids can work for fall and winter, but sometimes seem a bit to light for truly cold weather. read more
