My clients teach me so much, friends. They show me how little I really know about style and body image, and reinforce my belief that having conversations about where those two topics overlap can be a truly healing process. Before I work with a client, I ask her to do some thinking and writing, answering a handful of questions and prompts that I provide. Recently, a client sent me a 10-page response to my questions. Which I loved, because the more info and background I have, the better. And because it was abundantly clear to me that this client was smarter, more articulate, and considerably more knowledgable about garment construction than I was.

You’ve mentioned before that you’re lucky enough to generally be able to wear most clothes off the rack in a standard size. I have my share of fit challenges, being that I’m tall with long arms and legs. My shoulders are proportionally wide compared to my torso, I’m short waisted… you get the idea. Off the rack, very very few clothes fit me just perfectly. Because of this, I’m constantly trying to determine what constitutes “good enough.” Are these pants long enough? Do I love this jacket enough to cope with the sleeves being slightly too short? Is this shirt nice enough that it’s worth altering? Is it better to buy this tee shirt in a smaller size that’s not quite wide enough for my shoulders, or the bigger size that’s too baggy on my torso? I’d be very interested on your take about these questions if you have any thoughts. I am still working on developing my judgement about these issues, and it seems to be a frequent source of confusion for me.

I’m at a loss when it comes to fitting pants … My main problem is the horizontal pulling/creasing you get across the top of the thighs/pelvis. I have trouble finding any pants, but especially jeans, which fit sleekly across the pelvis/thighs. Often I put that down to the fact that my thighs are somewhat larger than my hips. Anyway, I assumed that that was a sign of ill-fit, but now I’m noticing that pants seem to do that on everyone.
What’s going on here, Sal? How much stress/crease is too much? Is my quest for sleek-fitting pants hopeless, not because pants are mass-produced, but because they’re supposed to do that? I get the feeling that I might have internalised one of my mother’s bizarre clothes-buying rules which no one else cares about…
