Reader Request: Shopping for Figure-challenging Garments

how to shop for hard to fit clothes

Jess popped this question into the suggestion box:

I don’t know quite how to phrase this, but I’d love a post on how to shop for those items that make you feel insecure. For example, I’m mostly a wearer of skirts and dresses, but I want to incorporate more trousers into my wardrobe. However, while I’m familiar and comfortable enough with my body in skirts and dresses to make shopping for those items straightforward and pain-free, shopping for trousers fills me with angst because it highlights those parts of my body I haven’t quite got to grips with (my thighs, mostly, which are the reason why I find it hard to get trousers to fit), and also because I find the sizing (with waist measurements and hip measurements and leg measurements and all of that) confusing. As a result, I tend to either get upset or give up very easily. But I want to overcome this, not least because my Dream Jeans are on their way out and I can’t find any more of the same brand and I want to be able to find some replacements! read more

Reader Request: Perfectionist Shopping Standards

Reader Jenni sent me this question via e-mail:

is there such a thing as a perfect garment off the rack? and if not, what aspects are more or less important to not compromise about?

for example, when i shop maybe i’ll see a great print that expresses my personal style, but the neckline makes me look dumpy. or i’ll find a dress in a great cut for my figure, but the color is not right for my skin tone or a match for my wardrobe. or there’s a shirt with a super flattering neckline, but has details at the shoulder or waist that don’t look good, or pockets on the boobs (not good for me!). it can definitely be frustrating! read more

Reader Request: Resolving Post-purchase Fit Issues

jeans dont fit

Reader Susan e-mailed me this question:

[A recent post] made me think about a pair of my jeans. They fit great in the store, they fit great if I walk around the store, but in real active life they slide down. I have a belt, but it’s weird that it happens. Tops that wind up too short, shoes that don’t fit in places where they seem to in the store, clothing that catches in spots where you wouldn’t expect … it sort of drives me nuts. I guess I’m an active person, always sitting on the floor, running, and moving in places where most adults don’t! read more
