Presentation

body positive style

I consider style to be an integral part of presentation of self. We all have private selves that few people get to know or see, and we all have public selves that we must share with strangers and the observing world. Our public selves may speak, walk, emote, and interact differently from our private selves. Those are behavioral choices we make, actions we finesse in order to convey certain aspects of our personalities. How we hold our bodies influences presentation of self, as does how we engage in eye contact, tone and volume of speaking voice, and expressive gestures. Dressing also contributes to the public self that we craft, and the clothing we choose to wear and the ways in which we wear it can broadcast certain beliefs, traits, or preferences that we hold. read more

What Makes Someone Photogenic?

toni-collette2

It took me too long to realize that I don’t take good pictures
‘Cuz I have the kind of beauty that MOVES
Ani DiFranco, “Evolve”

Two of my most gorgeous friends – one a man, one a woman – are also two of the least photogenic human beings I’ve ever encountered. And THEY KNOW IT. Years of mugging for the camera only to be confused and disappointed by the results have made both of them extremely shy of photographs. And, of course, the anxiety of anticipating every shot to be a bum shot makes both of them feel stiff and uncomfortable in front of the lens. These two people prove that it is definitely possible to be beautiful in motion, yet have a beauty that cannot be effectively captured by still photography. Another example? Mind-bogglingly talented actress Toni Colette, pictured above. This woman frequently looks stunning in her movies, and can do glamorous stunning, untamed stunning, and natural stunning with equal ease on film. And although she occasionally hits just the right smile and angle, most of her still photos just don’t do her justice. At least, in my opinion. She’s a knockout, but she’s just not terribly photogenic. read more

Cleavage Goes To Work

Once upon a time, our beloved Sally did a couple of posts about her interpretation of “sexy secretary” style. I remember reading both entries and the ensuing discussion in the comments sections with great interest. I considered jumping in but I was a brand spanking new reader at the time. I was still feeling shy and it seemed that Sally’s readers had covered all the relevant perspectives in a thoughtful, intelligent way.

Recently, I was poking around the site, looking for advice on pencil skirts (Me + pencil skirts = hot mess!) The sexy secretary entries popped up in my search string, so I decided to give them a re-read. That’s when I realized I did have something to add to the discussion. So rather than comment on a post from 2010, I figured I’d pipe up in a post of my very own. read more
