I am completely willing to sacrifice comfort for style.
OK, OK, I am completely willing to sacrifice comfort for style on most days. Or maybe “some days” would be more accurate. And, you know, not EVERYWHERE on my body. Just most spots. Or maybe “some spots” would be more accurate …
Well, regardless of the quantifiable particulars, when I wake up and think, “I need to be comfortable today. And not just for the first couple of hours. All day,” I build my outfits utilizing what I’ve learned about my body, my taste, and my preferences.

Allow me to make myself unpopular: I don’t believe that comfort trumps style on the weekends. I don’t believe we should eschew all things polished and structured in favor of all things soft and comfy just because the work week is on temporary hiatus. I don’t believe that blazers and heels are punishments while jeans and sneaks are rewards. I DO believe that mixing a few refined – and possibly mildly uncomfortable – pieces into your casual looks will help kick your casual style into high gear.

Reader Sarah emailed me this question:
I wondered if you could do a post or a question in your column or something on styling flares. I love that flares are back in style (great for balancing hips), but I am having trouble with the silhouette. Fitted on top or not? Long or cropped tops?, etc. Also, what shoes?
Oh flares, my old friends. I wore you throughout college, and well after … even when the rest of the world had switched to skinnies. And now I can’t quite believe you’re back. Already. Although, in my mind, 1990 is only 10 years ago …
