I thought it might be interesting to do a post on layering, with a focus on making every layer look coherent and intentional … I put together an intentionally layered look, but if it gets hot during the day, the bottom layer may look strange by itself, might be too sheer or tight of a tank top, or balance awkwardly with the pants or skirt. For hot days when you know you’ll be going in and out of air-conditioned buildings, for example. Layering is a BIIIIIG concept. Group of concepts even. And there’s certainly no right or wrong way to do it. But I wanted to talk about some layering fundamentals because for absolute ages I feared layering. Truly. It was one of those dressing techniques that others appeared to execute effortlessly and I could never seem to nail.

Growing up, I envied the girls who could throw on long-sleeved thermal shirts and then layer their cute little graphic tees on top. Because when I tried this, I looked like an outhouse with legs. It wasn’t until much later that I realized I was doing two things wrong: Trying a layered look that fought with my natural figure AND utilizing pieces that weren’t meant to be layered. read more

Multiples that Make Sense

When does it make sense to invest in multiples of a clothing or fashion item, and when should you hold off?

When you’re on a strict budget, the very idea of buying several versions of a single item seems laughable. You may imagine Kim Kardashian fondling her collection of Birkin bags and think that multiples are a luxury. And they absolutely are. You need more than one pair of panties and more than one pair of socks, but you needn’t purchase multiple identical pairs and you needn’t purchase them all at once, should finances prohibit.
