This Week I Love …

… grapeseed oil.

It’s been nearly two years since I started using the oil cleansing method, and I’m still so glad I made the change. My skin is softer and clearer than it’s been in ages, and I have fewer oily/dry patches than I used to. I’ve made some adjustments to my routine, mainly through adding the Clairsonic – which I use AFTER I’ve applied oil, wiped it away to remove my makeup, and then added another thin layer of oil for the brush. But I also changed up my blend a little. When I got started, I was using olive oil and castor oil in a 2/3 to 1/3 ratio, and although it worked better than any other cleanser I’d ever tried, I still had loads of clogged pores. I chatted with Sarah Von about her blend, and she sang the praises of grapeseed oil. So I did some nosing around and came upon this article over at Crunchy Betty – where I first learned about this method to begin with – which sealed the deal. I cut down my olive oil to just a dash, and swapped in grapeseed oil. read more

Combatting Acne as an Adult

Adult acne

I’ve written here and there about my struggles with adult acne, but I realized that I’ve never dedicated an entire post to the topic. My own acne is mostly under control, mild compared to what many people deal with, and considerably better than it used to be. But some of that is because I have had to change my behaviors on many fronts to ensure a relatively breakout-free existence.

Pillowcases and towels

In order to keep exposure to my own old sebum to a minimum, I change my pillowcase every other night. I sleep on one side, flip to the other side on the second day, then throw the pillowcase into my laundry basket. I use a new washcloth every night, and dry my face with clean, unused towels only. I use hand towels to dry, and have found that I can make them last for four uses by using half of each towel side per use. I own my home and do laundry once per week in my own basement. At least one person has mentioned that the amount of dirty linens that I generate through this system seems prohibitive, and I hear that. But when I travel for long periods and am unable to keep this up, I can see a difference within about a week. read more

My Thoughts on Oil Cleansing

This is an older post – read updates here, here, and here!

So. I’ve been using nothing but oil and water on my face since late October. Before I made the decision to do this, I did EXTENSIVE research. Meaning I had a five-minute conversation with Beauty Bets, got her blessing, and dove right in. Because that’s how I roll. And because I figured hey, if it was awful, I’d just stop.

I’ve had problem skin forever; Mostly acne, but also combination dry/oily issues. And although my acne is of the cystic/hormonal kind and absolutely requires more than over-the-counter remedies, recently I began to feel like I should change my cleansing routine. I’d been using Cetaphil face wash and a dermatologist-prescribed topical cream for several years, and the combination just felt … wrong. I broke out fairly regularly, my skin felt a bit sore at times, and I was pretty blotchy. read more
