Color Groupings: A Visual Feast

With 220 pins and counting, my Color Pairing Inspiration Pinterest board is one of my favorites to expand and explore. As the days get shorter and darker, I find myself downshifting to subdued neutrals even though I know that wearing color will lift my spirits. So I’ve been roaming around this board and Pinterest at large seeking out colorful inspiration. I’d be willing to bet that many of you could use some colorful inspiration, too, as the days dim down. Reader Request: Combining Colors

Lisa asked for “favorite colour combos and some tips on how to combine colours in unusual ways,” and as a self-proclaimed color fanatic, I’m happy to oblige!

But first, a confession: I cheat. Although I keep a Pinterest board of my own bold color combos, I mostly pin images of color combos I’d NEVER have dreamed up on my own. And I use this as a cheat sheet. It comes in especially handy when I have a solid-colored garment staring me down and cannot think of any other colors that would complement it. read more

Reader Request: Working with a Limited Color Palette

A lot of advice on wearing color assumes that one uses the whole color wheel. People recommend choosing opposite colors for contrast, or choosing a triad of 3 colors evenly spaced around the color wheel. However, what about those of us who only wear colors from one half or one third of the color wheel? I wear green (cool green) to blue to purple to pink. I’ve applied the advice on contrasting colors in a limited way by pairing green with purple or pink (i.e., the opposite ends of my color range), but it seems difficult to wear more than one color at a time if choosing from the center of my color range. So if I wear blue, I’m stuck with only blue because my other colors seem too close to it. And then how many shades of blue to wear simultaneously? read more
