You’ve mentioned before that you’re lucky enough to generally be able to wear most clothes off the rack in a standard size. I have my share of fit challenges, being that I’m tall with long arms and legs. My shoulders are proportionally wide compared to my torso, I’m short waisted… you get the idea. Off the rack, very very few clothes fit me just perfectly. Because of this, I’m constantly trying to determine what constitutes “good enough.” Are these pants long enough? Do I love this jacket enough to cope with the sleeves being slightly too short? Is this shirt nice enough that it’s worth altering? Is it better to buy this tee shirt in a smaller size that’s not quite wide enough for my shoulders, or the bigger size that’s too baggy on my torso? I’d be very interested on your take about these questions if you have any thoughts. I am still working on developing my judgement about these issues, and it seems to be a frequent source of confusion for me.

So. I know that many of you will never enjoy the wearing of button-front shirts no matter how I cajole and no matter how many alternatives and workarounds I offer. But JUST IN CASE you’re willing to give these shirts another try, or in case you’re in the button-front-loving minority, here are a few of my favorite ways to make these classic garments feel fresh and fun.
CUFF THE SLEEVES
At this point, I feel odd if I HAVEN’T cuffed my button-front’s sleeves. So sleeves worn long can feel awfully conservative to me, hearkening back to my office-working days. Also, I find 3/4 and cuffed sleeves to be more flattering since they draw the eye upward a bit toward my waist.

You’ve done balancing a long torso and downplaying hips but I was wondering if you could do something on short torsos? I’ve got “great” hips (ie they’re quite large), long legs, no torso and broad shoulders. I seriously look like a Sailor Moon character when I wear pants (because my navel is just that high and due to my hips I can’t wear pants lower than they’re designed) so I just don’t wear pants. Since my torso is so squat and I have those annoying internal organs jammed into a small space, there’s no definition to my waist. If it weren’t for the hips, I’d have no curves at all. I also have trouble wearing wide belts because my lack of a torso means if I wear a belt with anything that has a waistband the belt ends up squashed, unpleasantly, between the waistband and my breasts.
