I’m still surprised to be enjoying dusty, pale pastels – a family of colors I loathed for ages – but saturated versions of those same shades have appealed to me for much longer. I’ve had several color debates with my husband recently, which made me realize just how many color names are stolen from foods. And how imprecise that makes them. I mean, fresh raspberries are often the color of my dress, but anything made from raspberries is the color of my … everything else. (Minus necklace and exposed skin, of course.) Plums and eggplants are very similar colors in real life, but very different colors on fabric. And it’s all further complicated by the fact that no two eyes see the same color in the same way.
