Reader Request: Opaque White Shirts

circleskirt_outfit

I’ve had many, MANY requests flow in through Facebook, comments, and e-mails for help finding opaque white shirts. Some of you are hoping to find button-fronts, others tees, but everyone is frustrated by the dearth of opaque options out there. And I hate to say it – especially since I pride myself on being able to find virtually anything either in person or online – but I, too, struggle to find white shirts that are truly opaque. I’ll occasionally find a knit tee that works fine with just a nude bra, but button-fronts? Forget about it. The Foxcroft shirt shown above is among my most opaque, but even it has a bit of show-through in certain lights. read more

Reader Request: Retail Specialties

LOGOS2

Several of you have e-mailed me with similar requests, but Galena popped this one into the suggestion box:

… posts similar to “insomniac sale picks” where you post different stores/websites you can find wardrobe staples or pieces you find yourself reaching for often (for example, a yellow cardigan, or good places to get colored belts, etc) – links to the specific pieces would be ideal, but even saying “this store is generally good for this sort of thing” would be a great narrowing-down for your readers. Speaking as someone with limited income, I would also LOVE to see posts on where you can get mid-quality but affordable pieces, or links included for cheaper options when you do posts similar to what I describe above (for instance, many of the “ISP” links are out of my price range, even on sale). read more

Reader Request: Flattering Strong Shoulders and a Shorter Neck

nyc7_with text

Bubu e-mailed me this question:

I realize ever more that almost all models have narrow shoulders and long necks — but many of us mortals don’t. It doesn’t bother me, per se, but makes it harder to visualize how things will work on me — often things that look flowy or edgy on a model-type or in a catalog just look boxy and stuffy on me, e.g., most blazers, turtlenecks, necklaces, scarves, etc. I have worked hard to improve my posture and pull my shoulders down so they don’t rise up to my ears, which helps significantly, but any more tips/advice to flattering looks and things to avoid? read more
