This Week I Love …

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments.

So, I do love my red lippy. And I do know how to make it stay put. But I am LAAAAAAZY and far more likely to just slap it on and go than line, fill, apply, blot, apply, and blot. Which means that an hour or so and a glass of water later, I have what I lovingly refer to as “Scary Clown Lips.” I don’t actually know any scary clowns, and if I did I doubt they’d have a dark ring of lipstick around their mouths and zero pigment elsewhere … but the phrase has stuck somehow.

I will apply and blot on occasion, but even my favorite lipstick dries out my lips after a couple of hours. And I’ve tried a billion tinted balms, but most of them sit on top of my lips like icing and never sink in. I shake my tiny fists at Kiehl’s for discontinuing their tinted balms which I used and loved for years, but am thrilled to have discovered an even more richly pigmented replacement.

These Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments are aggravatingly expensive at $22.50 a pop. BUT. Unlike Burt’s Bees and Blistex and even the now-unavailable Kiehl’s that I loved, they truly add color to your lips. Quite a bit for a product so sheer, but not as much as an actual lipstick. (Although with enough coats you might get something approaching lipstick-level coverage.) And they fade off slowly and naturally, preventing Scary Clown Lips. In my opinion, they are the perfect balm-lipstick hybrid: Relatively moisturizing and super comfy to wear but also pigmented and rich.

I’ve got the berry color shown above, which has just the right mix of purple and red, and the cherry color which is bright red and surprisingly strong for a balm. One swipe usually does me just fine, and leaves my lips looking subtly red.

So yeah, it’s a lot of money for a lip balm. But if if it allows you to stop buying balm and lipstick and merge them into one? Maybe?

Anyone else a fan of these guys? Any favorite shades to share? Other tinted lip balms that actually moisturize and ALSO give some real color? Let us know in the comments!

I love Clinique Chubby Stick. http://www.clinique.com/product/1605/15520/Makeup/Lipsticks/NEW-Chubby-Stick-Moisturizing-Lip-Colour-Balm/index.tmpl . Two Ton Tomato is my go-to color. I bought it in a moment of weakness at a duty free in Toronto last June and just ran out. It’s a nice sheer color, but definitely perks up my face and doesn’t wear off in a scary way. It can be layered for a deeper color and subtly stains your lips so that I often only apply once in the morning and just use regular balm for the rest of the day.

I got a free sample of this at Sephora a while back. I’ve received so many compliments on it! I have never received a compliment on any lip product, ever.

I actually purchased a full size one so I can have one at home and one with me at all times. They have a other colors, but the Berry color that was free seems to be perfect for me.

Tarte LipSurgence is a lip tint and moisturizer all in one. Not cheap – $24 each but I’ve had mine for over 9 months and it’s still going. Love it over lipstick too for a little shine and extra moisture.

I tried this line when they still only had the original, non-tinted one. I liked how it felt, and it smelled great, BUT it gave me lipline pimples. Not worth it. Because of that, I never bothered with the tinted version.

I can’t stand anything that feels goopy, so my latest thing for lip color is to use stain topped with regular lip balm. I like the NYC stains. They’re not too expensive, and the color lasts a long time. The stain itself feels very dry, but then once I put my regular lip balm over it, it just feels like I have chapstick on.

The blistex stuff actually adds plenty of color for me – it looks natural rather than made-up, but it works.

My favorite tinted balm is Maybelline Baby Lips in Cherry Me. It doesn’t last long, but it the perfect sheer red and tastes/smells great. And it is cheap, so I don’t mind going through them by having to reapply throughout the day. My favorite clear lip balm is Doterra’s Peppermint and Wild Orange essential oil infused one. It smells divine!

I LOVE my fresh sugar lip treatment. I have to have it in Rose at all times.

This is one of the only lip colors my dry sensitive lips can handle on a daily basis. I have it in 3 colors. Clinique almost-lipstick is another good one.

    Sally,

For REAL scary clown lips, search for the cult film Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Now those are some scary lips!

I actually like Burt’s Bees pomegranate lip balm the best – it gives me just a tiny bit of color and that’s what I prefer. It doesn’t take much for lip color to look too harsh on me, and I rarely bother with grown-up lipstick. BUT I was just reading another blog talking about lip stains today also (Ain’t No Mom Jeans), and she said she really likes one called Lime Crime I think.

For the past couple of years, I received a box of three small sizes of their lip treatments as Sephora’s birthday gift to Beauty Insiders, and I love them! I can’t bring myself to buy the full size ones cos of the price, but as long as they keep giving them as gifts, I’m all for ’em.

I love the Bite brand tinted balms. They’re moisturizing enough and add a hit of colour.
