This Week I Love …

… hoop earrings.

OK, you caught me. I love hoop earrings EVERY week. My face is fairly rectangular so relatively large rounded earrings work well for me. I’ve got quite the little arsenal of hoops in my collection! But no two pairs are alike, and I adore the variety available in hoops.

Argento Vivo Large Hammered Hoop Earrings – $58

Swirly Keen hoops by April Kawaoka – $80

Alexis Bittar Miss Havisham Orbiting Hoops– $225

Filigree Round Hoop Earrings – $25

Jules Smith Edie Hoops – $85

Jessica Simpson Core Mirror Hoops – $28

Mocahete Copper Basket Hoops – $32

Are you a fan of hoop earrings? Do you have metal, finish, or hook style preferences? Do you like ’em big or small?

Like you, I often leave my hair grow long only to instruct the hairdresser to chop it all off until it short enough for the Navy seals ๐Ÿ˜‰ This inevitably leads to the dreadful predicament of having to rethink jewellery and other accessories even necklines. Hoops never work for me with hair as short as yours ๐Ÿ™ and I love them so.
    Excellent selection too!

  2. Laura

I LOVE hoop earrings. The bigger the better ๐Ÿ™‚ I wish they didn’t have such trashy connotations!

  3. Fab

I adore hoops……I have so many earrings in circular shape!! Specially love those filigree ones shown above!!

  4. Anat

Truth time – I am mortally afraid of hoop earings. Though I love the look, that large hoop just seems made for getting hooked on things and ripping through my earlobe….:-(

    • Sal

Oh no! As a hoop devotee since my teenage years, I can assure you that even a klutz such as myself has remained safe from lobe-ripping.

My signature is hoop earrings. I like them on the larger side….silver, gold, copper, I love them.

I love hoops too, especially large ones that dangle from a post — for some reason, they sit better against my face and have the right front-facing orientation. Come to think of it, that could be why some women don’t like hoops — if your earlobes are such that the hoop ends up sticking “out”, they can be a bit goofy looking. Experimenting with different insertions (snap bar, shepherd’s hook, or post) might lead to the perfect face-framing style.

SO TRUE. With the new shorter hairdo, I’m finding that my French hook versions look much better. Others stick out.

When I like earrings (which is mostly when I have shorter hair) I like hoops a lot. I admit that as Laura says, the “trashy” connotations of hoops give me pause, but I do wear only silver, which in my mind is less so… I prefer either multiple small hoops (I have three ear piercings still open, or did the last time I wore earrings) or else my very large, simple silver hoops, which are a slightly flattened “ribbon” shape. I have a pair of hoops shaped like crescent moons, but they’re solid silver, heavy, and hard to wear, even with “booster” backs on them.

I think the multiple small hoops is my favourite actually. Last time I had short hair, I went quite a while wearing open body jewellery hoops with bead ends in all three holes, which I just left in there. (I tend more towards the “signature piece” in my jewellery, though.)

These are all gorgeous finds for hoop earrings. Nice work! I especially love the third pair, the Alexis Bittar Miss Havisham Orbiting Hoops – gorgeous! I am a fan of darker metals most of the time for my earrings. I think those look better with my skin tone than the bright silver, and I also just like them more for me. If I am going to wear hoops, I find myself wanting to wear the big ones – they are more fun I think. Though, smaller hoops can be great for some occassions, too.
    Much love,

My sister got me gold hoops for Christmas last year (and I wear them CONSTANTLY), and I was told after opening them that shopping had been a pain in the neck because my older brother kept decreeing them too trashy.

I ended up with an oval shape that I really like. Big enough to be noticable, but not the usual circular shape, so just a little unusual.

  10. Sal

Wow. I feel like hoops are totally classic, and unless the rest of your outfit has an overtly “trashy” vibe, you’re golden! It’s all about context, no?

    • Sonja

Sorry, but actually I have to admit that I also consider them to be a bit on the trashy side. I finally gave in and bought some because I was looking for colourful earrings and I’ve found a big variety of coloured hoops, still I totally understand AJ’s brother.
But I very much like the copper ones you’re showing here!

    • Mistie

The idea of hoops being trashy makes me want to get on a soapbox about class-isms. But I won’t because I understand the context.

I love hoops, but I have really sensitive ears–to weight and metals, so I have to be really careful with the hoops I wear. Also, I have medium length curly hair and hoops look great peaking out from the curls.

I always feel really weird wearing hoop earrings. I think my ears are at such an angle that the hoops have no choice but to fall in an awkward way and flap around like Dumbo’s ears in the wind.

  12. Doreen

First off, your new do is super chic – I love it!

And like you I do love me some hoop-la. There are about 10 pair in my collection. Can’t have too much of a good thing.

  13. Patti @ NotDeadYet Style

I *love* those Miss Havisham hoops, and the copper baskets. Hoops are favorites of mine too but they often get lost in the curly hair. Your new do shoes them off perfectly.

  14. Elin

I too love hoops. The bigger the better. (The same goes for my hair in most cases.) One of my favorite outifts is a pair of straight leg jeans, white tee, black blazer, a scarf perhaps, and a pair of big silver hoops.

  15. LinB

Hoops? Yay! Not having a baby/toddler to yank on them and tear my earlobes? Yay! Fish-hooks, definitely.

  16. Cynthia

I love hoop earrings with my shorter hair. Those Alexis Bittar ones are so cool and organic looking.

  17. Sandy

I love hoop earrings! Sal, I totally agree with you; hoops are classic. If your outfit is trashy, well, that’s a whole other story.

If your fashion icons include the cast of “Jersey Shore”, then hoop earrings are the least of your problems.

  18. Katy

I’m a huge fan of hoop earrings! They are my go-to earrings of choice. The usual ones I wear are a little bigger than a silver dollar. But my favorite ones are large enough to be worn as bracelets. – Katy

    I love the brass ones!
I prefer the kind that have a straight ‘pokey’device ๐Ÿ˜‰ , then ‘clicks’ shut, as I have self-pierced ears and they are crooked, so sometimes getting a nubby,u-shaped hook in there is impossible! And painful ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. hellotampon

I love hoops too. I have no clue what my face shape is (I can’t figure that stuff out when it comes to my own body, for some reason), but I do like the way I look in them. My favorites are a pair of french hooks with 2 delicate silver hoops that are slightly intertwined, with 1 or 2 tiny blue crystal beads at each junction. They’re so pretty!

I’ve seen several comments so far saying that hoops are seen as trashy, and that’s come out of left field for me. I’ve never heard of that before. What makes them trashy?

  21. JoDi

Hoops are my favorite kind of earrings! They are my standard go-to earring in all sizes and shapes because they’re classic, and you can actually see them despite my long curly hair! I like medium-sized ones and the style of fastener doesn’t matter.

I’ve never heard anyone say hoops look trashy unless they’re really big!Maybe it’s a regional thing.

  22. sarah

gosh darn it, why did I automatically gravitate to the too-pricey-for-me $225 range? I swear, my taste is mocking me – constantly.

  23. Val C

I LOVE hoops!!!! I always have since my mother introduced me to earrings at a young age. In fact, I have 1 pair of hoops that I have had since 3rd grade.

I also worked part-time for 11 years with a retailer where I sold a lot of jewelry. So I acquired my collection that way – with a 3rd of it being earrings.

I love all kinds of hoops – round, square, twisted, oval, knife-edged, wedding-band style, inside-out gemstones ones, geometric, diamond-cut, pave’, satin-finished, huggie, demi or j-hoop (half hoop design that curves just under the ear), etc. (LOL – I know my jewelry-selling days are showing.) Anyway, I like them in all metals – stainless steel, sterling, rose/white/yellow gold or gold-clad over sterling.

1″ – 1 1/2″ being the most in my collection, but I have a couple of 2″ ones and I get a lot of compliments when I wear them. Those bigger ones often look best as basic high-polished, clean-cut looking and accompanied with hair swept back either in a low ponytail or bun or a side-swept hairstyle making the bigger hoops look more chic.

I think the hoop is the most versatile style that fits everyone – it is just a matter of seeing what fits your face shape. Go into JCPenney’s or Macy’s where you have a vast variety of earrings and you can play with different styles to see what fits your face. You may find that small hoops like huggies are great for your face or maybe the standard 1″ round or oval shape or maybe a simple pearl hoop.

For those who still feel the hoop is not their style, studs (of different widths/carat weights), button-style earrings, or dangles may be the style for you – giving you versatility to perk up your wardrobe and allowing you to build an earring collection.

My fave jewelry places for earrings are QVC, JCPenney, TJ Maxx, and HSN. However, look around, see what fits your budget, and have fun acquiring.

I have that fourth set but have never worn them. I ripped three of my fingers nails in half trying to get them off the card and was terrified to put them in my ears. But other than that I really do love hoops in all different sizes.
